What the Business Spikes Document Is and Why It Exists

The Business Spikes Document is a structured report used to record and analyze sudden increases in business activity, revenue, or operational demand. It captures context, timing, data sources, affected systems, and stakeholder notifications to support decision-making, resource allocation, and regulatory review. Organizations use it to document root causes, temporary controls, and remediation plans while preserving an auditable record. For electronic execution, include signature blocks, clear authorizations, and timestamps compatible with U.S. laws governing e-signatures such as ESIGN and state UETA statutes to ensure legal validity.

Why a Formal Spike Report Matters

  • Aggregating metrics across inconsistent time zones or reporting windows can yield misleading spikes that misdirect operational response and budgeting.
  • Overreliance on manual spreadsheets without version control raises error rates and slows remedial action when rapid decisions are required.
