What a Business Statement Request Is and When It’s Used

A Business Statement Request is a formal written notice used by a company to ask a counterparty, financial institution, vendor, or internal department to provide specific statements, records, or attestations. Common uses include verifying account balances, assembling documentation for loan underwriting or audits, confirming vendor performance, or gathering financial summaries for compliance reviews. The request defines the period covered, exact items required, required delivery method, and any authentication or notarization expectations. It may be completed on paper or submitted electronically under U.S. e-signature frameworks.

Why a Clear Business Statement Request Matters

A standardized request reduces ambiguity and follow-up, sets deadlines and scope, and creates an auditable record useful for audits, underwriting, and compliance reviews.

  • Corporate finance, accounting teams, and auditors compiling statements for due diligence, audits, or loan underwriting.
  • Vendors and procurement teams collecting counterpart financial statements to assess credit and contract performance.
