What the Business Use Attached means and when it applies

The Business Use Attached is a cover or attachment statement used to indicate that one or more supplemental documents accompany a primary filing or form for business purposes. It clarifies the purpose of attachments, identifies the business party, and documents which exhibits or schedules are part of the submission. Organizations use it to create a single, auditable record that ties supporting materials to the main document, reducing ambiguity during review and helping recipients verify that all required business-specific materials were provided.

Why include a Business Use Attached statement

A clear Business Use Attached statement improves document clarity, reduces processing friction, and creates an auditable link between the primary filing and supporting business materials. It helps reviewers identify attachments quickly and supports compliance with recordkeeping and disclosure obligations under applicable law.

Why include a Business Use Attached statement

Which roles typically prepare or rely on this attachment

Organizations and professionals use Business Use Attached statements whenever attachments must be tracked and attributed to a business filing.

  • Corporate administrators and compliance teams responsible for regulatory or vendor submissions.
  • Finance and accounting staff attaching invoices, tax schedules, or payment authorizations.
  • Legal and contracts teams bundling exhibits with agreements or procurement documents.

Small businesses, large enterprises, and third-party service providers all use this statement to prevent misrouting and to document the relationship between the primary document and its business attachments.

Step-by-step: preparing and submitting the Business Use Attached

Follow these sequential steps to prepare a compliant, auditable attachment package and minimize review delays.

  • 01
Gather attachments: Collect all supporting documents, check for completeness, and consolidate duplicates.
  • 02
Create attachment list: Number exhibits and record page counts; reference them in the primary filing.
  • 03
Confirm signatory: Verify who has authority to sign on behalf of the business and capture that name.
  • 04
Submit and retain: Send to the recipient and retain a certified copy with an audit trail for records.

How to configure a digital workflow for Business Use Attached

Set up fields, routing, and authentication so attachments are captured, signed, and retained in a single process.

Field Configuration
Attachment field Allow PDF/Word uploads, require filename and page count
Signature block Place signer name, title, and date fields
Routing order Define signer sequence and reviewer steps
Authentication Use email plus optional SMS or KBA as needed

Where to send or file the completed attachment package

Identify the recipient and choose the correct filing or submission channel before sending attachments to prevent rework.

  • Internal records: Store a signed copy in your corporate document management system
  • Regulatory filing: Attach to the primary filing per agency instructions
  • Vendor or counterparty: Send signed package to the named recipient or portal
  • Third-party auditor: Provide access to reviewers with read-only permissions

Delivery channels, integrations, and technical considerations

Choose delivery and integration options that preserve attachment integrity and auditability.

  • Cloud storage: PDF, DOCX supported; preserve original filenames
  • Enterprise integrations: Connectors for Salesforce, NetSuite, Microsoft 365
  • Authentication: Email, SMS code, or stronger methods available

Ensure the chosen platform retains an audit trail (timestamps, IP addresses, signer attribution) and supports required export formats for long-term storage.
