What the Business Use Case Cymbal Template Is

The Business Use Case Cymbal Template is a structured document for recording a proposed project or solution, its objectives, stakeholders, scope, costs, risks, and measurable success criteria. It standardizes how teams describe a business need, proposed functionality, dependencies, and the approval workflow so decision makers can evaluate viability and prioritize work. This template supports consistent comparisons between competing initiatives, clarifies required resources, and captures the authorization path for implementation, procurement, or funding approvals.

Why a Standardized Business Use Case Template Matters

A consistent template reduces ambiguity during review, speeds approvals by focusing reviewers on quantifiable outcomes, and creates an auditable record of decisions and assumptions.

Why a Standardized Business Use Case Template Matters

Who Typically Prepares and Reviews This Template

The Business Use Case Cymbal Template is used by cross-functional teams to summarize need, impact, and cost for a proposed initiative.

  • Product managers or business analysts who draft the requirement and expected outcomes for stakeholders.
  • Finance partners who validate cost estimates, budget availability, and ROI assumptions prior to approval.
  • Information security or legal reviewers who assess compliance, data handling, and contractual implications.

Reviewers include finance, security, legal, and the executive sponsor who must authorize funding or proceed decisions.

Primary Roles and Their Responsibilities

Project Sponsor

Senior leader who owns the business case and sponsor funding decisions; provides strategic context, prioritizes outcomes, and signs approvals once reviews are complete.

Document Owner
