What a Business Values Report Is and What It Covers

A Business Values Report documents an organization's core values, how those values are translated into decisions and behaviors, and measurable outcomes tied to strategic objectives. It typically includes an executive summary, stated value propositions, quantitative and qualitative metrics, stakeholder feedback, and recommended actions. The report serves internal governance, board oversight, investor transparency, and external reporting needs where values-driven policies or certifications are relevant.

Why an Organized Business Values Report Matters

A formal report clarifies expectations, aligns teams, and provides an auditable record of value-based decisions. It supports governance, investor due diligence, and regulatory transparency where organizational conduct or disclosure is required.

Why an Organized Business Values Report Matters

Typical Users and Stakeholders

The Business Values Report is used by internal leaders, compliance teams, and external stakeholders to assess alignment between stated values and operational practices.

  • Executive leadership and board members who review strategy alignment and governance outcomes.
  • Compliance, legal, and HR teams that track policy adherence and training related to stated values.
  • Investors, lenders, and partners requesting documented governance practices during due diligence.

Use the report to create a traceable record that supports oversight, audits, and continuous improvement cycles.

Common Preparation Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Using vague value language without behaviors makes measurement and enforcement ambiguous and reduces accountability across teams.
  • Failing to document data sources or calculation methods undermines metric credibility and hinders future audits or comparisons.
  • Omitting named owners and deadlines for actions prevents follow-through and allows improvement plans to stall indefinitely.
  • Relying only on verbal approvals or informal notes risks disputes; ensure documented sign-off with dates and roles.

Risks and Potential Consequences of an Incorrect Report

Regulatory Exposure: Incorrect disclosures may trigger regulatory review
Contractual Risk: Misstated commitments can breach vendor or investor agreements
Reputational Harm: Public inconsistency damages stakeholder trust
Financial Misstatement: Faulty metrics may distort performance reporting
Data Breach: Unsecured records increase liability
