What the Client Meter Authorization Form Is

A Client Meter Authorization Form documents a property owner's or tenant's consent to allow a utility, service provider, or contractor access to a meter (gas, electric, water, or submeter) on their premises. It specifies who may access the meter, for what purpose (reading, testing, installation, maintenance, removal), the authorized timeframe, and any access conditions or safety instructions. The form reduces ambiguity about consent, creates an auditable record of authorization, and helps the service provider schedule work while protecting both parties from liability arising from unauthorized entry or disputed service actions.

Why a Clear Client Meter Authorization Form Matters

Use this form to document consent, define access scope, and limit disputes; it creates an auditable record that supports compliance with applicable e-signature law such as ESIGN (15 U.S.C. ch. 96) and state UETA provisions where applicable.

Why a Clear Client Meter Authorization Form Matters

Who Typically Completes and Signs This Form

Several roles commonly prepare or sign a Client Meter Authorization Form depending on the context and industry.

  • Utility providers and meter readers: Internal operations staff or third-party contractors who schedule access and need written authorization.
  • Property managers and landlords: Sign when authorizing access to meters on multi-tenant or leased properties.
  • Homeowners or tenants: The property occupant or owner providing consent and contact details for scheduling.

Identifying the correct signer up front reduces processing delays and ensures the authorization is legally valid for operational use.
