What a Client Referral Notification Is and when it’s used

A Client Referral Notification is a short, written notice used to document that one party (the referrer) has recommended or introduced a prospective client to another party (the recipient). It typically records the referrer’s identity, the referred client’s basic contact details, the date of the referral, any agreed referral fee or compensation structure, and any disclosure language required by industry rules or contract. Organizations use this notice to create a clear record for billing, commission tracking, regulatory compliance, and to support timely follow up between sales, legal, and finance teams.

Why creating a clear Client Referral Notification matters

A written notification reduces ambiguity about who initiated the referral, documents compensation terms, and provides an auditable paper trail for internal controls and regulatory review. It protects referrers and recipients by setting expectations and reducing later disputes.

Why creating a clear Client Referral Notification matters

Who typically prepares and receives this notification

Various roles prepare Client Referral Notifications depending on industry and process.

  • Sales and business development teams responsible for lead handoff and commission tracking within a company.
  • Referral partners, independent agents, or affiliated professionals who expect payment or credit for introductions.
  • Finance, legal, or compliance teams that verify fee terms, licensing restrictions, or disclosure requirements.

Clear routing and single-point ownership prevent lost or incomplete referral records.
