What the Electrical Load Calculation Form Is and When It’s Used

The Electrical Load Calculation Form documents calculated electrical demand for a building or alteration, converting connected loads into expected continuous and noncontinuous loads and applying demand factors. It supports sizing of service equipment, distribution panels, feeders, and conductor ampacities in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and local amendments. Contractors, licensed electricians, and design professionals use the form to prepare permit submittals, support inspection reviews, and demonstrate compliance with jurisdictional load-sizing and overcurrent protection requirements.

Why Accurate Load Calculations Matter for Safety and Code Compliance

A complete Electrical Load Calculation Form ensures safe equipment sizing, prevents overloaded conductors, and reduces inspection delays. It provides a standardized record for permit reviewers and inspectors and helps owners and contractors estimate material and equipment costs reliably.

Why Accurate Load Calculations Matter for Safety and Code Compliance

Who Typically Prepares and Reviews This Form

The form is completed by professionals responsible for electrical design and installation and reviewed by authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) personnel.

  • Licensed electrician or electrical contractor who installs and documents on-site circuitry and equipment.
  • Electrical engineer or designer responsible for balanced load distribution and complex demand factor application.
  • Plans examiner or building inspector who verifies calculations for permit approval and code compliance.

Step-by-step: Completing the Electrical Load Calculation Form

Follow a consistent sequence to reduce errors and speed plan review.

  • 01
Identify Project: Enter project name, address, and owner details exactly.
  • 02
List Loads: Record each appliance, motor, HVAC, and lighting load with ratings.
  • 03
Apply Demand: Use NEC demand factors and diversity for applicable load groups.
  • 04
Summarize Results: Provide service size, calculated kVA, and breaker/feeder sizing.

Core sections every professional form should include

A professional Electrical Load Calculation Form groups data so reviewers can validate totals, assumptions, and code references quickly.

Project Header

Project address, owner, permit number, drawing reference, and responsible professional contact information for traceability during plan review and inspections.

Connected Load Schedule

Itemized list of lighting, receptacles, appliances, HVAC, motors, and specialty equipment with nameplate ratings and duty cycles for accurate aggregation.

Load Calculations

Stepwise arithmetic applying NEC (NFPA 70) rules and demand factors with intermediate totals shown so reviewers can follow the math.

Service & Feeder Sizing

Calculated service kVA, recommended service amperage, feeder conductor sizes, and overcurrent device ratings linked to final load figures.

Single-line Diagram

Simplified single-line showing service, meter, main disconnect, feeders, and major loads; supports the calculation and aids inspectors on-site.

Notes & References

List applicable code editions, local amendments, and any design assumptions or load management systems used in the calculation.

Required information fields at a glance

Typical timelines for permit review and inspections

Timing varies by jurisdiction and project complexity; plan accordingly to avoid construction delays.

Permit Submission Deadline:

Submit with permit application; no universal deadline

Plan Review Time:

Often 7–21 business days depending on AHJ workload

Engineer Approval Time:

3–10 business days for stamped reviews typically

Inspection Scheduling:

Allow 5–15 business days after approval

Permit Issuance:

Issued after all plan comments are cleared

Common mistakes that cause rejections or delays

  • Omitting motor starting currents and duty cycles, which leads to underestimated feeder sizing and inspector comments.
  • Applying incorrect demand factors or failing to cite the NEC section used for the calculation, confusing the reviewer.
  • Failing to attach a single-line diagram or mismatching equipment ratings between diagram and schedule, triggering resubmittal.
  • Entering service voltage or phase incorrectly (e.g., single‑phase vs three‑phase), causing wrong conductor and breaker recommendations.

Consequences of incorrect or incomplete calculations

Permit Rejection: Plan review returned
Safety Hazard: Risk of overheating or fire
Inspection Delay: Work cannot proceed
Financial Penalty: Fines or corrective costs
Liability Exposure: Contractor or designer risk
Equipment Damage: Premature failure possible
