What an Electrical Project Analysis Is and when it's used

An Electrical Project Analysis is a technical report that documents the electrical scope, load calculations, equipment selection, single-line diagrams, code compliance checks, risk assessments, and cost estimates for a building or infrastructure project. It supports permitting, bidding, procurement, and installation oversight, and helps stakeholders evaluate feasibility and budget implications across design and construction phases.

Purpose and practical benefits of the analysis

The Electrical Project Analysis clarifies scope, identifies safety and code issues, and produces quantified load and equipment data to inform permits, budgets, and procurement. It creates a documented basis for contractor bids and reduces change orders, while supporting regulatory review under federal and state codes such as NEC and jurisdictional inspection requirements.

Purpose and practical benefits of the analysis

Typical users and stakeholders for this report

The Electrical Project Analysis is completed by technical staff and consumed by a range of project stakeholders depending on contract and regulatory needs.

  • Electrical engineers and design consultants who prepare load calculations, single-line diagrams, and compliance statements for permits.
  • General contractors and project managers who use the analysis to price electrical scope, schedule inspections, and order equipment.
  • Owners, facility managers, and permitting officials who review risk, costs, and code conformance before approvals and acceptance.

Tailor the contents and signature authority to match who is responsible for design, permitting, construction oversight, and final acceptance.

Core components every professional analysis should include

A complete Electrical Project Analysis combines narrative, calculations, diagrams, schedules, compliance checks, and cost data to support permitting and construction.

Executive Summary

Concise project overview, main findings, primary electrical loads, critical risks, and high-level cost implications for decision makers.

Load Calculations

Detailed demand calculations, diversity factors, panel schedules, and feeder sizing that demonstrate capacity and equipment selection rationale.

Single-Line Diagrams

Scaled diagrams showing service, transformers, main distribution, feeders, protective devices, and one-line annotations for installers and reviewers.

Equipment Schedules

Manufacturer models, ratings, short-circuit data, and required clearances for switchgear, transformers, panels, and major loads.

Code & Compliance

NEC references, jurisdictional notes, required inspections, and list of exceptions or variances requested for permitting.

Cost Estimate

Line-item material and labor estimates, contingency, allowance items, and assumptions used for budgeting and procurement.

Required information to include on the cover and header

Project Name: Official project identifier
Client / Owner: Legal name of owner
Site Address: Street, city, state, ZIP
Scope Summary: High-level work description
Referenced Drawings: Drawing numbers and revision
Prepared By: Engineer name and license

Step-by-step process to complete the analysis

Follow a logical sequence from document assembly through technical review to final signatures and distribution.

  • 01
Gather Documents: Collect drawings, specifications, utility data, and existing electrical records.
  • 02
Perform Calculations: Run load and short-circuit calculations and verify assumptions against code.
  • 03
Prepare Deliverables: Assemble narrative, diagrams, schedules, and cost worksheets into the report.
  • 04
Review & Sign: Internal technical review followed by authorized signatures and dated certification.

Standard online workflow settings for digital completion

Recommended configuration values help standardize online preparation, signing, and recordkeeping for project teams.

Field Configuration
Template Name Electrical Project Analysis | Standard template
Authentication Email link + SMS one-time passcode
Conditional Fields Show equipment schedule when load > threshold
Notifications Notify preparer and owner on completion

Typical eSubmission flow for the analysis

A compact, repeatable workflow ensures consistent signatures, audit records, and archival of the final PDF.

  • Upload Document: Sender uploads PDF or DOCX version to the signing system.
  • Place Fields: Add signature, date, license, and initials fields where required.
  • Signer Receives: Signers get email or SMS link to review and sign.
  • Archive Signed: Completed PDF and audit trail are saved to cloud storage.

Technical considerations for electronic completion and storage

Ensure the chosen platform supports required authentication, audit trails, and file formats before eSubmission.

  • Integrations: Salesforce, Microsoft 365, NetSuite, Procore integration options for document routing
  • File Formats: Accepts PDF, DOCX, and Excel for calculations and final signed PDF/A export
  • Authentication: Supports email links, SMS OTP, and advanced signer verification

Confirm storage encryption and retention settings with your IT team; require TLS in transit and AES-256 at rest to meet common compliance needs.

Key timelines to track during analysis and permitting

Common milestones and expected review windows help set realistic submission and approval targets for project schedules.

Report Turnaround:

3–10 business days typical depending on scope

Permit Submission Window:

Submit with application; jurisdiction review often 2–8 weeks

Inspection Scheduling:

Inspector availability commonly 1–4 weeks after request

Revision Response:

Allow 3–7 days for technical corrections

Record Retention:

Keep final signed report per retention policy

Frequent errors that delay approvals or increase cost

  • Incomplete load calculations or missing diversity factors leading to undersized feeders and required rework by electrical contractors.
  • Omitted manufacturer data or short-circuit ratings causing rejected equipment schedules at permitting or site inspection stages.
  • Ambiguous scope statements or missing exclusions that drive change orders and disputed contractor invoices during construction.
  • Failure to include required licensing or stamp information for the preparing engineer, resulting in permit application denial or processing delay.

Consequences of incorrect or noncompliant analysis

Code Noncompliance: Fines, rework required
Safety Hazard: Increased fire risk
Permit Delay: Project schedule impact
Contract Dispute: Claims and litigation
Increased Cost: Budget overruns
Insurance Risk: Possible denial of coverage
