What the Flight Checkride Document Is and Why It Matters

The Flight Checkride Document records the outcome of a pilot practical test, logging examiner findings, maneuvers evaluated, endorsements, and final pass or fail determinations. It typically accompanies the airman certification file, proof of endorsement(s), and identification documentation. For many U.S. practical tests the examiner completes an FAA-approved form or electronic record which becomes part of the applicant's certification history; the document also provides a clear audit trail for the applicant, instructor, examiner, and FAA.

Why an Accurate Flight Checkride Document Matters

A correct checkride record protects certification rights, documents proficiency, and supports FAA processing or appeals. It satisfies legal recordkeeping expectations under federal aviation procedures and preserves the candidate's evidence of training and endorsements for future validation.

Why an Accurate Flight Checkride Document Matters

Who Completes and Relies on the Flight Checkride Document

The Flight Checkride Document is completed by the designated pilot examiner (DPE) or authorized FAA representative before being shared with the applicant and retained per regulatory guidance.

Copies are retained by the examiner, provided to the applicant, and become part of the airman certification record where required.

Core Sections of a Professional Flight Checkride Document

A complete checkride document groups administrative data, evaluation items, endorsements, examiner findings, signature blocks, and a compliance checklist to match the applicable Airman Certification Standards or Practical Test Standards.

Administrative Data

Applicant name, certificate number (if any), date of birth, contact, and government-issued ID reference to verify identity.

Test Details

Type of practical test (e.g., private, instrument), aircraft make/model, and test location including airport identifier.

Standards & Tasks

List of maneuvers and knowledge areas evaluated mapped to the applicable ACS/PTS tasks and standards.

Performance Notes

Examiner observations for each task, including deficiencies, tolerances, and any remedial guidance provided.

Decision & Endorsement

Pass/fail result, any limitations or conditions, and the examiner's endorsement language if applicant passes.

Signatures & Audit Trail

Examiner signature, date/time, ID or certificate number, and an audit trail for any electronic submission.

Required Information and Fields at a Glance

Applicant Name: Full legal name
Date of Birth: MM/DD/YYYY
Test Type: Private, Instrument, Commercial, etc.
Aircraft: Make/model and N-number
Examiner ID: DPE or FAA designee number
Result: Pass or Fail

Step-by-Step: Completing the Flight Checkride Document

Follow these steps to ensure the document is accurate, defensible, and usable for FAA processing or recordkeeping.

  • 01
Verify identity: Confirm government ID and record ID details
  • 02
Record test details: Enter aircraft, location, and test type
  • 03
Complete task evaluations: Score or remark each ACS/PTS item
  • 04
Sign and date: Examiner signs; provide copy to applicant

How to Set Up an Electronic Checkride Workflow

Configure an online workflow that collects identity, consent, performance notes, and signatures while preserving an audit trail for FAA review.

Field Configuration
Applicant ID Field Required; require upload of government ID image
Task Checklist Grouped checkboxes mapped to ACS/PTS rows
Examiner Signature Mandatory with signer authentication
Audit Log Automatic IP, timestamp, and change history

Where the Completed Document Goes and Who Sees It

A completed checkride record is retained by the examiner, delivered to the applicant, and made available to FAA personnel or certification processors as required.

  • Examiner Record: Examiner retains a signed copy for designee records
  • Applicant Copy: Applicant receives the completed document
  • FAA Submission: Examiner or designee submits to FAA or IACRA as required
  • Training File: Instructor retains notes for remedial or recurrent training

Digital Signing and eSubmission Considerations

When moving a checkride document online, choose a platform that supports secure signatures, audit trails, and required integrations.

  • Integrations: Support for Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and cloud storage
  • Authentication: Email, SMS code, or advanced signer verification
  • File Formats: PDF and DOCX import/export with embedded audit trail

Ensure the chosen system preserves an unalterable audit log and can produce a tamper-evident PDF for long-term retention and FAA review.

Timelines and Processing Expectations

Timelines depend on examiner practice and FAA processing. Applicants should plan for immediate documentation at test completion and confirm any subsequent FAA filing deadlines.

Document Completion:

Complete and sign on test date

Applicant Receipt:

Provide copy at conclusion of checkride

FAA Processing:

Timing varies; confirm with FAA regional office

Record Corrections:

Request promptly if errors are found

Retention Start:

Retention begins on document creation date

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Failing to verify government ID or recording the wrong birth date
  • Omitting aircraft identification or the specific test type from the record
  • Using inconsistent language that conflicts with ACS/PTS descriptors
  • Not preserving an audit trail for electronic submissions

Consequences of an Incorrect or Incomplete Document

Certification Delay: Processing held until corrected
Challenge Risk: Increased chance of appeal or investigation
Invalid Endorsement: Misstated endorsements may be rejected
Administrative Sanctions: Potential procedural action against examiner
Record Dispute: Discrepancies complicate credential verification
Data Privacy: Improper handling may breach privacy rules
