What the Freight Logistics Agreement Covers

A Freight Logistics Agreement is a contract between a shipper, carrier, and any intermediary (broker or 3PL) that defines responsibilities for transporting goods. It sets the scope of services, pickup and delivery obligations, rates and payment terms, liability limits, insurance requirements, routing instructions, and claims procedures. The agreement also allocates risk for loss, damage, delay, and cargo handling, and may incorporate regulatory compliance provisions for hazardous materials, customs clearance, and carrier licensing. Clear, written terms reduce disputes and support claims and insurance recovery.

Why a Formal Freight Logistics Agreement Matters

A written agreement clarifies who pays, who bears risk, and how claims are handled, reducing operational disputes. It documents carrier obligations, delivery windows, and required insurance, and creates evidence for liability, audit, and regulatory compliance under U.S. transportation rules.

Why a Formal Freight Logistics Agreement Matters

Who Commonly Uses the Freight Logistics Agreement

Typical users include commercial shippers, carriers, brokers, and third‑party logistics providers who need formal terms to manage recurring or high‑value shipments.

  • Shippers and consignors managing inbound or outbound freight for retail, manufacturing, or distribution.
  • Carriers and owner‑operators defining pickup, delivery, and liability obligations per shipment.
  • Third‑party logistics providers (3PLs) or brokers coordinating multiple carriers under central contractual terms.

Legal, operations, and procurement teams review and approve terms; field staff and dispatchers rely on the executed agreement for routing and claims procedures.

Who Signs and Approves

Logistics Manager

Typically a shipper’s logistics or supply chain manager signs for operational acceptance and routing authority, and is responsible for providing accurate shipment details and documentation for claims.

Carrier Executive

An authorized carrier representative (operations director or VP) signs to accept carriage obligations, confirm insurance coverage, and assume the carrier liability limits stated in the contract.
