What a Grooming Service Agreement Is and when to use it

A Grooming Service Agreement is a written contract between a grooming business and a client that documents the services to be provided for an animal, pricing, schedule, health disclosures, liability limits, and the rights and responsibilities of each party. It creates a clear record of expectations for one-off or recurring appointments, manages risk (allergies, behavior, medical conditions), and provides terms for cancellations, refunds, and property damage. Properly executed, it supports enforcement, recordkeeping, and regulatory compliance for consumer protection, tax, and animal-welfare considerations.

Why a written Grooming Service Agreement matters

A clear agreement reduces misunderstandings, documents informed consent for handling and medical disclosures, and defines payment, cancellation, and liability terms. It protects both the groomer and client by making expectations explicit and supporting dispute resolution.

Why a written Grooming Service Agreement matters

Who typically completes a Grooming Service Agreement

Use a Grooming Service Agreement whenever services, recurring appointments, or potential health or safety risks are present to document consent and limit exposure.

  • Pet owners booking grooming, daycare, or boarding services; they supply pet health, vaccination, and contact information.
  • Grooming salons and mobile groomers managing appointments, deposits, and liability waivers for in-salon and on-site visits.
  • Pet care platforms and multi-location businesses standardizing service terms across staff and locations to reduce disputes.

Essential sections to include in a professional Grooming Service Agreement

A complete agreement covers parties, services, schedule and fees, health and behavior disclosures, liability allocation, and cancellation or refund rules.

Identify the business and client by full legal name, business DBA if applicable, address, phone, and email for formal notices and invoicing.

Describe grooming tasks, add-on services, and any exclusions. Specify if services include bath, trimming, dematting, nail care, ear cleaning, or specialized handling.

Schedule & Fees

State appointment date/time, service duration, pricing, deposit requirements, accepted payment methods, and when additional charges apply.

Health & Safety

Require disclosure of vaccinations, medical conditions, medications, parasites, and aggressive behavior. State the right to refuse or stop service for safety.

Common mistakes to avoid when preparing the agreement

  • Omitting complete pet health disclosures, which can lead to unexpected injuries or veterinary claims and unclear liability allocation.
  • Keeping vague service descriptions that leave room for differing expectations about grooming scope, timing, or additional charges.
  • Failing to collect a signed, dated agreement before starting work, which weakens enforcement and refund defenses.
  • Not recording deposits or payments in writing, causing disputes about refund eligibility and no-show fees.

Potential risks and legal consequences of an incorrect agreement

Liability exposure: Higher legal risk
Vet costs: Client may seek reimbursement
Consumer claims: State consumer protection fines
Chargebacks: Payment disputes and fees
Recordkeeping violations: Tax documentation issues
Service disputes: Negative reviews and reputational harm
