Best Practices to Keep Job Descriptions Accurate and Defensible

Best practices ensure the Healthcare Practical Nurse Job Description is accurate, defensible, and useful for staffing and compliance.

Align duties with state nursing practice acts
Review the relevant state board guidance before finalizing duties; consult facility policy and legal where delegation or IV/medication administration is included. Document supervisory expectations and training requirements to support defensibility during audits.
Use precise language for clinical tasks and limits
Avoid ambiguous verbs such as 'assist' without qualifiers. Specify tasks, frequency, and required supervision level. Include examples where appropriate to reduce interpretation risk and ensure consistency across units and shifts.

Schedule periodic reviews and competency reassessments
Set annual review dates and trigger-based reviews after incidents or regulatory changes. Tie competency reassessment schedules to high-risk tasks and maintain signed documentation confirming completion and supervisor sign-off.
