What the Healthcare Specialty Care Agreement Is and When It Applies

A Healthcare Specialty Care Agreement is a written contract that defines the scope, responsibilities, payment terms, information-sharing and legal obligations between a referring provider, a specialty care provider or an organization that arranges specialty services for patients. It documents clinical responsibilities, timelines for consultations or procedures, credential and insurance requirements, data exchange and privacy protections, and billing and dispute processes. These agreements support continuity of care, clarifies payment responsibilities and help manage regulatory obligations such as HIPAA privacy and security requirements for protected health information.

Why a Clear Specialty Care Agreement Matters

A clear, written agreement reduces clinical and administrative ambiguity, protects patient privacy under HIPAA, and establishes billing and liability expectations among parties. It helps avoid payment disputes and supports regulatory compliance for electronic records and signatures.

Why a Clear Specialty Care Agreement Matters

Who commonly completes or signs this agreement

Typical users include clinicians, specialty clinics, hospital contracting teams and administrative staff who coordinate referrals and external services.

  • Hospitals and health systems coordinating outpatient specialty referrals and contracts between departments.
  • Specialty clinics or independent specialists who accept referred patients and manage schedules and billing.
  • Payers, case managers and managed care teams overseeing authorization, claims and compliance requirements.

The document is also used by payers, case managers and compliance officers who verify credentialing, data sharing and payment terms.
