What the I-485 Form Is and when it applies

Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, is the USCIS form used by eligible noncitizens already in the United States to apply for lawful permanent resident status (a green card). The form collects biographical details, immigration history, eligibility basis, and supporting evidence so USCIS can determine whether the applicant qualifies to adjust status without departing the U.S. Filing rules, required evidence, and fees vary by eligibility category (family-based, employment-based, asylum/refugee adjustment, special immigrant, etc.). Applicants must follow USCIS instructions carefully and provide accurate, consistent information to avoid processing delays or denials.

Why completing the I-485 Form correctly matters

Filing a complete, accurate I-485 establishes the administrative record USCIS uses to grant adjustment of status and to schedule biometrics and an interview. Proper submission preserves eligibility for employment authorization and travel benefits while the application is pending.

Why completing the I-485 Form correctly matters

Common applicants and professionals who work with I-485

Typical users include applicants adjusting status in the U.S., immigration attorneys preparing cases, accredited representatives, and employers sponsoring employment-based adjustments.

  • Family-based applicants (spouses, parents, children) preparing evidence of relationship and admissibility.
  • Employment-based applicants and HR teams coordinating employment verification and supporting documents.
  • Immigration attorneys and accredited representatives assembling forms, exhibits, and affidavit evidence.

Accurate completion benefits applicants and sponsors by minimizing RFEs and supporting timely biometrics, interview scheduling, and USCIS decisions.
