What the Immigration I-864A Form Is and when it applies

The Immigration I-864A Form, Contract Between Sponsor and Household Member, documents a household member's agreement to make income or resources available to a sponsor for the support of an intending immigrant. Used alongside Form I-864 Affidavit of Support, the I-864A creates joint contractual liability under INA §213A (8 U.S.C. §1183a) so that the intending immigrant is less likely to become a public charge. The form records household member identity, relationship, income or asset details, and a dated signature; it is submitted for family-based immigrant visas and adjustment of status where the sponsor’s own income does not meet the required Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Why the I-864A matters for family-based immigration

Completing the Immigration I-864A allows a sponsor to count a household member’s income or assets toward USCIS support requirements, strengthening a visa or adjustment of status case. The I-864A creates a documented, enforceable commitment that clarifies financial responsibility and reduces administrative risk for the petitioner and beneficiary.

Why the I-864A matters for family-based immigration

Who typically completes or signs the I-864A

The form is used by sponsors, household members, and immigration attorneys preparing family-based Affidavit of Support packages for USCIS or consular processing.

  • Petitioning sponsor who lacks sufficient income under the Federal Poverty Guidelines and requires household support.
  • Household member (cohabiting family or roommate) who agrees contractually to make income or assets available for support.
  • Immigration attorneys or accredited representatives preparing I-864/I-864A exhibits and supporting financial documentation for filing.

All named parties should understand the contractual obligations and sign according to USCIS guidance and applicable state authentication rules.

Primary signer roles

Sponsor

The sponsor is the petitioner who files Form I-864 and may ask a household member to join via I-864A when personal income is insufficient. The sponsor remains primarily responsible for support obligations under INA §213A and must demonstrate domicile and intent to support the immigrant.

Household Member

A household member is someone residing in the sponsor’s primary household who agrees by I-864A to make income or assets available. Signing the I-864A creates a contractual obligation; the household member should verify tax records and proof of residence before signing.
