What the Interior Doors Specification Sheet Is

An Interior Doors Specification Sheet is a standardized technical record used in construction and renovation projects to describe each interior door’s required characteristics and installation expectations. It documents door tag, size and tolerance, material and core type, fire and acoustic ratings where applicable, hardware sets and hinge types, glazing notes, finish instructions, and any special treatments. The sheet links to drawings and schedules so architects, contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers have a consistent, auditable reference that reduces ordering errors, code conflicts, and on-site rework.

Step-by-step: Completing the Specification Sheet

Follow this sequence to capture complete door requirements and avoid downstream procurement or installation errors.

  • 01
    1. Gather project data: Collect drawings, schedules, and code requirements.
  • 02
    2. Tag locations: Assign door tags that match plan references.
  • 03
    3. Fill specifications: Enter dimensions, core, ratings, and hardware.
  • 04
    4. Review and approve: Obtain sign-offs from design and construction leads.

Why a Complete Specification Sheet Matters

A detailed Interior Doors Specification Sheet reduces ordering errors, supports code compliance, and aligns project teams on materials and installation expectations to lower change orders and delays.

Why a Complete Specification Sheet Matters

Who Typically Prepares and Uses This Sheet

Clear role responsibilities improve turnaround time and reduce disputes over product acceptance or installation scope.

  • Architects and interior designers — define door types, finishes, and code-driven requirements for plans and schedules.
  • General contractors and subcontractors — confirm measurements, order doors and hardware, and coordinate installation sequencing.
  • Manufacturers and suppliers — use the sheet to fabricate to spec and provide lead times and submittals.

What a Professional Interior Doors Specification Sheet Includes

A strong sheet groups technical data, code-critical attributes, and installation notes so every stakeholder finds precisely the information they need.

Door ID & Tag

Unique identifier tied to drawings and schedules; ensures the correct product is ordered and installed in the intended location.

Dimension & Tolerances

Finished opening, rough opening, thickness, and tolerance limits; critical for frame fitting and factory machining of hardware mortises.

Material & Core

Specifies face material and internal core construction (solid, hollow, mineral core) that affect performance and weight.

Fire & Acoustic Ratings

Required fire-resistance rating and STC values, including labeling, listing source, and any testing standard references.

Hardware Schedule

Comprehensive hardware set including hinges, locks, closers, strikes, and handing; reference to ANSI/BHMA or project standards.

Finish & Glazing

Paint or stain system, gloss level, glass type and lite sizes, sealing and grout notes, and any special treatments.

Core Administrative and Tracking Fields

Document Version: Revision number
Approval Status: Approved / Pending
Approver Name: Responsible approver
Creation Date: MM/DD/YYYY
Linked Drawing: Sheet and detail ref
Submittal Required: Yes / No

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Entering finished dimensions instead of rough opening dimensions, causing on-site fitting issues and rework.
  • Omitting fire or acoustic ratings where required, resulting in noncompliant installations and corrective orders.
  • Listing hardware generically instead of using an agreed hardware set, leading to incompatible components on delivery.
  • Failing to record handing or hinge positions, which can create unusable doors and costly replacements.

Risks and Contract Consequences of Errors

Misordered Doors: Project delays and added costs
Code Noncompliance: Permit hold or rework
Installation Delays: Schedule disruption
Increased Costs: Change order expenses
Warranty Voids: Manufacturer exclusions
Liability Exposure: Safety and claim risk

How to Route and Approve the Sheet

A simple circulation workflow ensures checks for code, procurement, and installation before ordering begins.

  • Prepare Sheet: Populate all technical fields and attachments.
  • Design Review: Architect verifies code and aesthetics.
  • Procurement Review: Buyer confirms lead times and availability.
  • Final Approval: Authorized signatory signs and locks the sheet.
