What an Interview Video Release Form Is

An Interview Video Release Form is a written consent that authorizes use, distribution, and editing of recorded interview footage. It documents who appears in the recording, what rights the interviewer or organization receives (use, distribution, licensing), the duration of permission, and any compensation or restrictions. For organizations operating across states, a clear release reduces ambiguity about ownership, attribution, and permitted uses and provides an auditable record of the subject's consent for legal, marketing, and archival purposes.

Why a Clear Release Matters

A properly drafted Interview Video Release Form protects the organization and the interview subject by capturing consent terms, usage scope, and compensation. It reduces legal risk and creates a reproducible record for future disputes or distribution decisions.

Why a Clear Release Matters

Who Typically Completes This Form

Use the appropriate signatory block (individual, parent/guardian, or authorized representative) to ensure the consent is valid for the intended use.

  • Producers and journalists securing on-camera consent from interview subjects.
  • Marketing and communications teams collecting permissions for promotional videos.
  • HR or legal teams obtaining consent for internal training or testimonial use.

Essential Elements of a Professional Release

A complete Interview Video Release Form should be concise but comprehensive, defining rights, limits, and signatory authority while providing contact and verification details.

Parties

Full legal names and company or production entity details for both the person granting permission and the organization receiving rights.

Grant of Rights

Clear statement of rights granted (use, edit, reproduce, distribute) and whether rights are exclusive, transferable, or sublicensable.

Scope of Use

Describe permitted channels (web, broadcast, social), geographic extent, language restrictions, and any time limits on use.

Compensation

Specify monetary payment, credit, or other consideration, if applicable, and the timing or conditions for payment.

Representations

Subject confirms they have authority to grant rights, and whether third-party rights or privacy issues exist.

Signatures

Signature, printed name, date, and witness or guardian signature when required; also include a signer identity method.

How to Complete the Release — Step by Step

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using vague language about permitted uses that leads to disputes over distribution rights and derivative works.
  • Failing to verify signer identity, especially for multi-state or commercial uses, which weakens enforceability in disputes.
  • Not securing guardian consent where a minor appears on camera, creating potential invalidity and regulatory risk.
  • Omitting details about compensation, duration, or transferability, which can result in claims or renegotiation demands.

Risks of an Incorrect or Missing Release

Copyright Dispute: Use may be enjoined
Privacy Claim: Statutory damages possible
Contract Voidance: Release may be unenforceable
Monetary Liability: Damages or settlement costs
Distribution Halt: Content pulled pending resolution
Reputational Harm: Public backlash or complaints
