Calculation Summary

Method: Consultant will use the Rational Method (Q = C I A) or other approved hydrologic method as appropriate. Results summarized below.

Payment Terms

Consultant shall be compensated for services performed under this Agreement as set forth below.

Term and Termination

This Agreement commences on the Service Start Date and continues until completion of the Scope of Work unless earlier terminated in accordance with this section.

Either party may terminate for material breach if the other party fails to cure within the notice period above. Termination does not relieve Client of payment for work performed and reasonable close-out costs.

Confidentiality

What the Landscape Drainage Calculations Form Is

The Landscape Drainage Calculations Form documents hydrologic and hydraulic analyses used to size drains, swales, culverts, and stormwater management features for a site. Typical contents include watershed area, rainfall intensity, runoff coefficients, time of concentration, peak flow calculations and supporting sketches or plan excerpts. Municipalities and permitting authorities commonly require the form as part of grading, landscaping, subdivision, erosion control or building permit packages. Where local codes require it, calculations must be prepared or reviewed and stamped by a licensed professional engineer.

Why a Proper Drainage Calculation Matters

A professionally completed form demonstrates compliance with local stormwater standards, reduces the risk of onsite erosion and downstream flooding, and shortens permit review cycles. Clear assumptions and documented methods reduce rework, support contractor bids, and establish technical basis for inspections.

Why a Proper Drainage Calculation Matters

Who Typically Prepares and Reviews This Form

The Landscape Drainage Calculations Form is used by design professionals, contractors, and permitting staff during development and renovation projects.

  • Landscape architects and civil engineers — prepare calculations, document methods, and provide sealed certification when required.
  • Landscape and grading contractors — use results to size drainage components and coordinate construction sequencing.
  • Municipal stormwater or permitting officers — review the form for compliance with local design manuals and code requirements.

Each party relies on the form for different purposes: compliance, constructability, and regulatory approval.

Step-by-Step: Completing the Form

Follow a consistent sequence: collect site data, choose methods, perform calculations, summarize results, and attach supporting drawings and certifications.

  • 01
Gather Data: Compile site plan, soil maps, impervious areas, and local rainfall data.
  • 02
Choose Method: Select Rational, NRCS, or municipal method per local code.
  • 03
Perform Calculations: Calculate Tc, runoff coefficients, and peak discharges for each subarea.
  • 04
Prepare Submission: Attach sketches, drainage map, narrative, and responsible engineer stamp if required.

Digital Workflow Settings for Online Completion

Set up a consistent digital workflow to collect data, apply templates, and route sealed files to reviewers and permitting staff.

Field Recommended Setting
Units Imperial (ft, cfs) or Metric; be consistent throughout
Design Storm Source NOAA Atlas or local IDF table per jurisdiction
Signature Requirement Digital signature plus engineer stamp when permitted
File Format Submit PDF/A with embedded calculations and plan excerpts

Typical Submission and Review Flow

The form moves through defined stages: prepare, submit, review, revise, and approve. Clear routing reduces delays.

  • Prepare: Draft calculations, attach plans and narrative.
  • Submit: Send package to permitting authority or plan reviewer.
  • Review: Reviewer checks assumptions, methods, and compliance.
  • Approve: Issue permit or request revisions; record approval.

Core Sections Every Professional Form Should Include

A complete submission organizes calculations, assumptions, and certifications so reviewers can verify compliance quickly and consistently.

Summary Narrative

Concise description of the drainage problem, design objectives, codes referenced, and a summary of results that orients reviewers without re-computing values.

Hydrologic Calculations

Stepwise runoff computations for each subarea using the chosen method, including time of concentration, curve numbers or C values, and intermediate results.

Hydraulic Sizing

Sizing calculations for pipes, channels, culverts, inlets and overflow routes with velocity checks and Manning values where applicable.

Plan Excerpts

Scaled site plan or detail showing flow paths, grading, inlet locations, catchment boundaries and elevations referenced in the calculations.

Assumptions & Sources

List rainfall data sources, soil classifications, lookup tables, municipal design criteria, and any structure sizing references used.

Engineer Certification

Signed and dated certification by the responsible licensed professional, plus seal when local ordinances require a stamped submittal.

Security and Compliance Considerations

Encryption: TLS 1.2/1.3 and AES-256
Audit Logs: Timestamped signing history
Access Controls: Role-based permissions
HIPAA Support: BAA available where needed
ESIGN/UETA: Meets ESIGN and UETA standards
Certifications: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001

Penalties and Project Risks from Incorrect Submissions

Permit Denial: Local authority may refuse approval
Fines: Civil penalties and enforcement costs
Construction Delay: Revisions can add weeks to schedule
Erosion Liability: Post-construction damage and remediation
Insurance Issues: Premium increases or claim denials
Re-Submission Costs: Additional consultant or permit fees

Common Preparation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using an incorrect rainfall intensity or design storm that does not match the local code leads to rework and reviewer comments.
  • Applying inappropriate runoff coefficients or failing to separate pervious and impervious areas skews peak flow calculations and sizing.
  • Not attaching a site plan or including inconsistent elevations and invert information causes misinterpretation of flow paths and construction errors.
  • Submitting unsigned or unsealed calculations when a professional stamp is required will result in permit rejection or formal resubmittal.
