What a Legal Vehicle Possession Letter Is and When it’s Used

A Legal Vehicle Possession Letter is a written declaration that documents who currently has physical custody of a motor vehicle and under what authority that possession occurs. Commonly used in private sales, consignment, storage disputes, lender repossession coordination, and temporary transfers for insurance or repairs, the letter records the parties, vehicle details (VIN, make, model), dates, and the reason for possession. When properly completed and, if necessary, notarized, the letter helps third parties—including DMVs, insurance carriers, and tow/storage operators—verify lawful custody and support title or lien actions.

Why this Letter Matters for Clear Vehicle Custody

A clear possession letter prevents disputes over custody, supports title or lien transfers, and documents the facts used by insurers, DMVs, and storage operators when deciding release or lien enforcement. It creates a concise record that can reduce processing delays and provide legal evidence if possession is contested.
