What a Mass Intention Request Is and When it’s Used

A Mass Intention Request is a written or electronic form used to schedule multiple liturgical intentions—such as prayers, memorial Masses, anniversary remembrances, or special thanksgiving services—at a parish or institutional chapel. The form collects requester contact details, preferred dates and times, the names to be remembered, the offering amount, and any pastoral notes. Parishes use this record to coordinate scheduling, ensure liturgical planning, and maintain an auditable history of requested intentions for accounting and pastoral follow-up.

Why a Standard Mass Intention Request Matters

A consistent Mass Intention Request reduces scheduling conflicts, ensures accurate recording of names and offerings, and supports financial tracking and pastoral continuity. Standardized requests help staff confirm availability, document fulfillment, and preserve a clear record for families and the parish.

Why a Standard Mass Intention Request Matters

Who Typically Completes and Processes These Requests

Parishes, chaplains, parish secretaries, funeral directors, and family members commonly prepare Mass Intention Requests to reserve liturgical times and record offerings.

  • Parish office staff: Manage schedule, verify dates, and record offerings for accounting and reports.
  • Family or requester: Provide names, relation, preferred dates, and pastoral notes for the intention.
  • Funeral directors / coordinators: Submit requests tied to funeral liturgies or memorial services.

Clear roles and a completed request reduce follow-up calls and help the parish maintain accurate sacramental and financial records.

Step-by-Step: Submitting a Mass Intention Request

Complete these steps to submit a clear, processable request whether using paper or an online form.

  • 03
Attach documents: Add supporting documents for funerals or burial permissions if required.
  • 04

Typical Processing Flow for a Mass Intention Request

A standard workflow helps parishes confirm availability, accept offerings, and record fulfillment for sacramental and accounting records.

  • Receive Request: Staff logs the request and confirms receipt to the requester.
  • Confirm Availability: Scheduler checks Mass calendar and notes alternatives if needed.
  • Record Offering: Finance team records the offering for bookkeeping and donor records.
