What the Miscellaneous G-28 Form Is and when it applies

The Miscellaneous G-28 Form refers to the Notice of Entry of Appearance as Attorney or Accredited Representative used with U.S. immigration filings to notify government agencies that a legal representative will act on behalf of an applicant or respondent. It identifies the attorney or accredited representative, the client, the case or receipt number when available, and contact information needed for official correspondence. Submitting a complete G-28 ensures the government sends notices and communications to the representative and documents the representative’s authority to receive sensitive case information on behalf of the client with immigration agencies such as USCIS or EOIR.

Why filing a correct Miscellaneous G-28 matters

A properly completed G-28 establishes official representation, routes notices to counsel, and reduces processing delays by ensuring the agency communicates with the authorized representative instead of the applicant.

Why filing a correct Miscellaneous G-28 matters

Who commonly files a Miscellaneous G-28

Filing the G-28 at the right time helps protect client confidentiality and ensures notices, decisions, and requests for evidence reach the authorized representative promptly.

  • Immigration attorneys who will receive case correspondence and provide legal representation.
  • Accredited representatives recognized by the Department of Justice and authorized to act in immigration matters.
  • Individuals or family members filing to indicate representation when counsel handles the case.

Step-by-step: completing a Miscellaneous G-28

Follow these core steps when preparing the G-28 to minimize errors and processing delays.

  • 01
Prepare case details: Locate the USCIS receipt or A-number and primary form information before starting.
  • 02
Enter representative info: Provide attorney name, firm, mailing address, phone, email, and bar or accreditation details.
  • 03
Identify client: Use the client’s full legal name and A-number exactly as on immigration documents.
  • 04
Sign and date: Representative and client sign where required and include the signature date.

Key elements every professional Miscellaneous G-28 should include

A complete form collects identification, proof of authority, contact details, and an auditable signature to document representation clearly for the agency.

Representative ID

Full name and firm details for the attorney or accredited representative; helps the agency verify credentials and routing for case notices.

Bar or Accreditation

State bar number or DOJ accreditation entry with issuing authority to confirm the representative’s lawful ability to practice or represent clients.

Client Identification

Client full legal name, date of birth, and A-number when available so the agency links the notice to the correct file without ambiguity.

Case Reference

Include receipt numbers, petition type, or alien registration numbers so the G-28 attaches to the correct filing or proceeding.

Contact Details

Representative mailing address, email, and phone number used by the agency for urgent correspondence and official notices.

Signature Evidence

Signed and dated signature block with electronic signature metadata or notary acknowledgment when required by the receiving agency.

Consequences of an incomplete or incorrect G-28

Case Rejection: May lead to filing rejection
Delayed Notices: Agency correspondence may be misdirected
Unauthorized Practice: Representation issues risk disciplinary action
Privacy Breach: Sensitive information may be exposed
Loss of Rights: Missed deadlines or evidence requests
Recordkeeping Penalties: Failing retention may violate regulations

Common pitfalls when preparing a Miscellaneous G-28

  • Entering an incorrect bar number or accreditation identifier causes verification failures and can delay case processing with USCIS or the court.
  • Using different name formats for the client across documents breaks automatic case matching and may require manual agency correction.
  • Failing to include a receipt or A-number makes it harder for the agency to associate the G-28 with the correct filing or proceeding.
  • Applying a scanned signature image without an audit trail or signer authentication increases the chance an agency will question the document’s validity.

Practical tips for accurate and efficient G-28 completion

Adopt standard templates, validate identifiers, and preserve a tamper-evident signed record to reduce friction and maintain compliance.

Standardize template fields
Use a consistent G-28 template prefilled with firm contact details and required field validation to minimize manual data-entry errors and accelerate submission.
Verify identifiers
Confirm the client’s A-number, date of birth, and the representative’s bar or accreditation number before saving or submitting the form to avoid mismatches.
Preserve audit trails
Retain signed PDFs and exportable audit trails showing signer identity, timestamps, and IP addresses to support authenticity during agency review or disputes.
Coordinate with client
Obtain clear, written consent from the client for representation and data sharing, and keep a contemporaneous record of that consent for the file.
