What the Monthly Business Note Is and When it's Used

A Monthly Business Note is a concise internal record that summarizes key operational, financial, and compliance items for a business each month. Typical content includes a short executive summary, revenue and expense highlights, status of critical projects, material risks or exceptions, action items, and approvals. Organizations use this note to maintain an auditable monthly trail of decisions, to inform leadership and stakeholders, and to support accounting, audit, or regulatory reviews. The Monthly Business Note is a flexible document and can be adapted for board summaries, department reports, or consolidated company reporting while preserving a consistent header and signature block for accountability.

Why a Monthly Business Note Matters to Your Organization

A clear Monthly Business Note creates a single, consistent record of month-end performance, decisions, and outstanding actions that supports governance, auditability, and cross-team alignment. It reduces ambiguity around who approved what, when, and under what assumptions.
