What the Payroll Tax Withholding Form CA DE4 Is

The Payroll Tax Withholding Form CA DE4 (California Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate) is the state form employees complete to declare withholding allowances and request additional California income tax withheld from pay. Employers use the employee's CA DE4 to determine state payroll withholding amounts and to update payroll systems. The DE 4 is provided to the employer — it is not generally filed with the Employment Development Department unless requested; employers retain the employee's completed form for payroll and audit documentation.

Why accurate completion of CA DE4 matters
