Today, patients are increasingly requesting the natural death they desire as a way to hasten their deaths and avoid unnecessary pain and suffering. In 1998, the first natural death request for a Pennsylvania resident was made by lisa miller from new castle. Over time this trend has grown, and today, the Pennsylvania department of behavioral health (DOH) reported, as many as 10 percent of requests for natural death for the patient's estate come from Pennsylvania residents. Many of these patients are in good health, and many are elderly or terminally ill. In 1998, the doh made it mandatory for the state's family practice surgeons to receive continuing medical education (CME) in natural death. (pa. Stat. Ann. § 6105(b)(1)). The doh has developed a booklet entitled, “natural death: death of entitlement." dr. Hays states: “one of the biggest challenges of caring for such patients is the uncertainty of their futures. For some, they fear the loss of dignity, dignity of death, and loss of autonomy. For others, loss of dignity could include a loss of independence from family. "to these patients, dying has become akin to being on death row waiting for execution or the destruction of their bodies." in a similar vein, the national council on social workers and mental health says that people who feel lost and lost find comfort in having a designated person they can call to share information, encourage, or comfort them. This pamphlet will describe three things which you can do in response to your patient's request for natural death: 1. Inform her of your medical opinion and what your opinion is regarding natural death for her. 2. Advise her on her rights as a patient and her obligations as a patient. 3. Advise her about your view as an physician regarding natural death. 1. The law of natural death in pennsylvania the law of natural death in some jurisdictions varies from state to state, but all states recognize the right of an incapacitated person to request, with or without prior notice, the natural death of that person by will. Each state has laws regarding the process by which this request and execution is carried out.
