What a Personal Loan Addendum Is and when it applies

A Personal Loan Addendum is a supplemental document that modifies, clarifies, or extends terms of an existing personal loan agreement without replacing the original promissory note. Typical uses include adjusting payment schedules, changing an interest rate, adding or removing a co-signer, updating collateral descriptions, or documenting a temporary forbearance. An addendum should reference the original agreement by date and parties, state the specific sections being changed, and be executed by the same parties who signed the original loan. Proper execution preserves enforceability and reduces disputes over the underlying loan terms.

Why a formal addendum matters for loan documentation

Using a written Personal Loan Addendum creates a clear, dated record of changes and prevents ambiguity about borrower and lender obligations. It helps lenders demonstrate consistent underwriting and collectors show contractual amendments in dispute resolution or audits.

Who typically prepares and signs a Personal Loan Addendum

Clear signatures and dated attachments reduce downstream disputes and support regulatory or tax reporting requirements where applicable.

  • Individual lenders and loan servicers: updates loan schedules, interest adjustments, or forbearance terms.
  • Borrowers and co-signers: request term changes, accommodate financial hardship, or confirm consent to modifications.
  • Attorneys and compliance officers: draft or review language to ensure regulatory and contractual consistency.

Real-world scenarios where addenda are used

Two practical examples illustrate common, legitimate uses of a Personal Loan Addendum and how they are documented.

Payment Deferral

A borrower requests a three-month payment deferral due to short-term income loss.

  • The lender agrees to postpone payments and specify interest accrual.
  • The addendum records the deferral period, revised due dates, and repayment plan, and is signed and dated by both parties with an auditor-friendly reference to the original note.

Change of Interest Rate

Lender and borrower agree to convert a variable rate to a fixed rate for remaining term.

  • New schedule and APR are listed.
  • The addendum quotes the exact paragraph being amended, shows the new repayment table, sets the effective date, and provides signature lines for borrower, lender, and notary where applicable.
