What the Private Tutoring Lesson Addendum Is

A Private Tutoring Lesson Addendum is a short written amendment to an existing tutoring agreement that records changes to lesson dates, times, rates, scope, or cancellation and makeup policies. It ties a specific lesson or series of lessons to the main tutoring contract, identifies parties and responsibilities, and supplies an effective date. For recurring tutoring arrangements, the addendum prevents misunderstandings about schedule and fees and creates an auditable record suitable for digital signing under U.S. electronic signature laws.

Why a Lesson Addendum Matters for Tutors and Families

A concise addendum reduces disputes by documenting agreed adjustments to lessons, preserves billing and scheduling clarity, and supports compliance when you collect signatures electronically under ESIGN and UETA frameworks.

Why a Lesson Addendum Matters for Tutors and Families

Who Typically Completes a Lesson Addendum

The addendum is completed when one party requests a change to an existing tutoring arrangement and both parties must confirm agreement.

  • Private tutors and tutoring companies who need to change dates, times, or pricing for specific lessons
  • Parents or guardians approving schedule changes for minors and confirming updated billing terms
  • School or program administrators managing supplemental lessons or special-session arrangements

Use the addendum as a short, signed record attached to the original tutoring agreement; retain a copy for accounting and potential dispute resolution.

Core Elements to Include in a Professional Addendum

A well-structured addendum is brief but explicit: identify the base agreement, list changed lesson details, show updated fees or credits, state cancellation and makeup rules, set an effective date, and provide signature blocks for all parties.

Reference

Cite the original tutoring agreement by date and parties so the addendum is clearly linked to the base contract and not a standalone document.

Lesson Details

Specify affected lesson dates, start and end times, location or online platform, and whether the change affects a single session or a series of sessions.

Fees and Payment

State any adjusted per-lesson rate, total due, deposit applied or refunded, and updated invoicing or payment due dates.

Cancellation Policy

Describe notice periods, makeup session terms, late cancellation fees, and how missed lessons will be handled under the amended schedule.

Effective Date

Enter the date the changes take effect and whether the addendum applies prospectively or retroactively for billing purposes.

Signatures

Include dated signature blocks for tutor and parent/guardian or authorized representative, and space for witness or notary if required.

  • Audit Trail: Capture IP, timestamp, and signer actions

Ensure storage and export options match your recordkeeping policies and that any HIPAA or state privacy requirements are addressed before sending.

Common Preparation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaving the base agreement unspecified or using vague references, which can make it unclear which contract the addendum modifies
  • Omitting exact dates or times and relying on relative phrasing that causes scheduling confusion across time zones
  • Failing to state whether the fee change is per session or total, which often leads to billing disputes
  • Relying on initials or informal approvals rather than dated signatures, which weakens enforceability

Consequences of an Incorrect or Missing Addendum

Billing Disputes: Delayed payments
Schedule Conflicts: Missed lessons
Legal Exposure: Breach claims
Tax Issues: Incorrect reporting
Privacy Risk: Unauthorized disclosures
Enforceability: Signature challenges
