What a Product Marketing Description Is

A Product Marketing Description is a structured document that summarizes a product’s purpose, target audience, key benefits, core features, pricing cues, and go-to-market positioning. It is used internally by product, marketing, and sales teams to align messaging, create collateral, and guide launch activities. The document typically combines succinct value propositions, buyer personas, competitive context, and approved wording for external materials to ensure consistent communication across channels.

Why a clear Product Marketing Description matters

A clear Product Marketing Description reduces ambiguity between teams, shortens launch cycles, and helps maintain regulatory and brand consistency. It supports compliant external messaging when paired with appropriate legal review and preserves a single source of truth for sales and support materials.

Why a clear Product Marketing Description matters

Who typically creates and uses this document

Product, marketing, and sales teams commonly create and maintain the Product Marketing Description to align internal stakeholders before external publication.

  • Product managers and product marketing managers who define positioning and feature prioritization.
  • Marketing managers and copywriters who need approved messaging and claims for campaigns.
  • Legal and compliance reviewers who verify regulatory language and permissible claims.

External reviewers such as legal, compliance, and channel partners reference the document to ensure messaging is accurate and permitted for public distribution.

Core components of a professional Product Marketing Description

A complete description balances strategic context and practical content so teams can reuse it across collateral, pricing, and sales enablement without reinterpreting intent.
