What the Professional Stylist Contract Covers

A Professional Stylist Contract is a written agreement between a stylist (or salon) and a client that records the services to be provided, payment terms, scheduling and cancellation policies, liability allocation, and any service-specific requirements. It clarifies whether the stylist is an independent contractor or employee, documents deposits and refund rules, and can include confidentiality or intellectual property clauses for creative work. The agreement also sets governing law and dispute resolution methods and may record consent to electronic signing under the ESIGN Act and state UETA or ESRA rules.

Why a Written Contract Matters for Stylists

A clear contract reduces disputes, protects payment rights, defines cancellation and no-show remedies, and documents client expectations. It creates enforceable obligations, supports tax classification or insurance needs, and provides a record for claims or regulatory inquiries while enabling lawful electronic execution under ESIGN and applicable state law.
