What a Professional Wrestling Contract Covers

A Professional Wrestling Contract is a written agreement between a performer and a promoter, agency, or production company that defines booking obligations, compensation, exclusivity, schedule, and conduct standards. It allocates risk through insurance and indemnity clauses, establishes whether the performer is an independent contractor or employee for tax and labor purposes, and records intellectual property rights for ring names, likenesses, and match footage. The document typically sets the contract term, notice periods for cancellation, dispute resolution and governing law, and signature blocks for all parties, allowing either wet or electronic signatures under U.S. law.

Why a Clear Wrestling Contract Matters

A clear written agreement reduces disputes, clarifies payment timing, and protects both performer and promoter interests under applicable state and federal rules.

Why a Clear Wrestling Contract Matters

Who Uses the Professional Wrestling Contract

Typical users include independent wrestlers, promoters, talent agents, production companies, and legal or business teams responsible for event operations.

  • Independent Wrestlers: Sign to confirm booking dates, pay rates, travel, and medical obligations before each engagement.
  • Promoters and Venues: Use contracts to secure exclusive appearance windows, payment schedules, and liability protections for events.
  • Talent Agencies: Manage multiple performers' schedules, commissions, and IP assignments across bookings and media uses.

Each party uses the contract to document rights, payment terms, schedule obligations, and safety or insurance requirements prior to performance.

Primary Signer Profiles

Performer — Independent Contractor

A contracted wrestler who provides performances under agreed booking terms. The profile must confirm legal name, tax classification, availability windows, travel requirements, and acceptance of liability and medical testing provisions.

Promoter — Event Organizer

An organization or individual that hires talent for events. The promoter must identify payment terms, insurance coverage, production obligations, venue safety standards, and termination or cancellation protocols.

Core Sections to Include in the Contract

These elements form the contractual backbone. Include precise language and measurable obligations to minimize ambiguity and support enforcement under state and federal law.

Parties

Identify legal entities and doing-business-as names, including the performer’s legal name and any ring name; specify mailing addresses and contact information for notices.

Term & Schedule

Set effective date, performance dates, rehearsal requirements, and notice windows for rescheduling or cancellation. Tie payment milestones to completed performances or deliverables.

Compensation

Detail base pay, bonuses, per-diem, travel reimbursement, and any prize or gate-share arrangements; specify currency and payment timeline.

Exclusivity & Outside Work

State whether the performer is restricted from appearing for competitors and list permitted outside engagements or blackout periods with remedy language for breaches.

Insurance & Liability

Require proof of liability and medical insurance as appropriate, allocate indemnity obligations, and describe processes for addressing injuries during events.

Termination & Remedies

Define termination for cause and convenience, notice periods, refund or settlement mechanics, and dispute resolution method (arbitration or court).

Step-by-Step: Completing the Contract

Follow these steps in order to prepare, review, and execute the agreement safely and efficiently.

  • 01
Prepare Draft: Populate parties, dates, fee terms, and insurance requirements.
  • 02
Review Terms: Confirm tax classification, exclusivity, and IP clauses with counsel if needed.
  • 03
Obtain Signatures: Collect all signatures and witness or notary steps if jurisdiction requires them.
  • 04
Distribute Copies: Provide executed copies to all parties and retain originals per retention rules.

Typical Electronic Signing Flow

A standard e-signing workflow minimizes delays while preserving evidentiary records for enforceability.

  • Upload Document: Add the final contract PDF or DOCX.
  • Place Fields: Insert signature, initials, and date fields.
  • Choose Authentication: Select email, SMS code, or stronger verification.
  • Send to Signers: Route in order or via shared link for signing.

Recommended Digital Workflow Settings

Configure signing settings to match the contract’s legal and operational needs before sending.

Field Configuration
Signer Order Sequential or parallel, choose per negotiation.
Authentication Email link, SMS code, or knowledge-based options.
Reminders Schedule automatic follow-ups to reduce execution delays.
Retention Enable audit trail and store executed copies securely.

Technical Considerations for eSigning and Delivery

Confirm platform support for file types, integrations, and required signer authentication before sending the contract.

  • File Formats: PDF, DOCX, and fillable forms supported.
  • Integrations: Connect to Google Workspace, NetSuite, or Salesforce.
  • Security: TLS in transit and AES-256 at rest.

Key Deadlines to Track for the Contract

Track signing, payroll reporting, insurance proof, and post-termination notice windows to remain compliant and avoid penalties.

Execution Deadline:

Sign before the first scheduled performance or as contractually required.

Insurance Certificate Due:

Require proof of coverage before arrival at venue.

Payroll Reporting:

Collect W-9s for independent contractors before first payment to avoid backup withholding.

Cancellation Notice:

Observe the contract’s notice period for termination and rescheduling.

Tax Filing Timing:

Prepare for Form 1099-NEC reporting by January 31 each year.

Contract Lifecycle: Key Milestones

A sequential timeline clarifies responsibilities from negotiation through post-event administration.

01

Negotiation & Drafting

Agreement terms are finalized and reviewed by parties and counsel.

02

Execution

All required signatures and auxiliary authorizations are obtained.

03

Performance Window

Performer fulfills scheduled appearances and production obligations.

04

Closeout & Records

Payments settled, releases collected, and records retained appropriately.

Common Preparation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Vague compensation terms that leave bonus calculations or reimbursements undefined and create later disputes between performer and promoter.
  • Failing to confirm tax classification, which can trigger backup withholding, payroll reclassification, or misfiled 1099 reporting obligations.
  • Omitting insurance requirements or proof of coverage, exposing parties to uninsured third-party claims and venue liability.
  • Not specifying media rights and IP ownership for footage, photographs, or merchandising, leading to marketing and royalty disputes.

Essential Data Elements to Collect

Legal Name: Full legal name
Tax ID: SSN or EIN
Mailing Address: Street, city, state ZIP
Ring Name: Stage or performance name
Payment Details: Payee and payment method
Insurance Info: Carrier and policy number

Potential Legal and Financial Risks

Breach Damages: Monetary liability
Withheld Pay: Disputed payments withheld
Tax Penalties: IRS penalties possible
Workers’ Comp Exposure: Uninsured injury costs
IP Disputes: Name or footage claims
Reputation Harm: Public relations risk

Practical Use Examples

Two common scenarios illustrate how clauses are applied and why specific provisions matter in real booking contexts.

Independent Promoter Booking

An independent promoter contracts a local performer for a one-night event, specifying fee and travel reimbursement

  • The performer supplies a W-9 and proof of insurance
  • The promoter pays on event completion and retains rights to record the match under a limited license for event promotion.

Agent-Managed Tour

A talent agent signs multiple dates for a touring performer with nonexclusive clauses, per-diem, and cancellation windows

  • Agent secures venue contracts and confirms insurance
  • The agreement centralizes payments and clarifies media rights for broadcast licensing.
