What the Project Critique Form Is

A Project Critique Form is a structured post-project document used to record what worked, what did not, and recommended actions for future projects. It captures objective project details, stakeholder feedback, performance against scope, schedule, budget, and risks. Organizations use the form to surface root causes, assign corrective actions, and create an auditable record for continuous improvement. The document is typically completed by the project team and reviewed by sponsors and key stakeholders, then archived for lessons-learned and compliance purposes.

Why a Formal Project Critique Matters

A structured critique improves accountability, preserves institutional knowledge, and reduces repeat mistakes by documenting evidence-based findings and assigned follow-ups. It supports governance, audits, and better project estimating.

Why a Formal Project Critique Matters

Who Typically Completes the Project Critique Form

Final review and signoff by the sponsor or governance board closes the critique and triggers any assigned remediation activities.

  • Project Manager — Leads completion, compiles inputs, and records corrective actions for closure.
  • Project Team Members — Provide operational feedback, log issues, and suggest process improvements.
  • Project Sponsor / Stakeholder — Reviews outcomes and approves prioritized action items.

Typical Signers and Their Roles

Alex Rivera, Project Manager

Responsible for preparing and consolidating the critique, Alex documents objective metrics, facilitates team input sessions, and ensures corrective actions are assigned and tracked until closure.

Jordan Lee, Program Sponsor

As sponsor, Jordan reviews findings, allocates resources for remediations, and signs off on the final critique to confirm governance-level acceptance and prioritization.

Core Elements to Include in a Professional Form

A complete Project Critique Form presents factual metrics, root-cause analysis, and actionable recommendations to support improvement and auditability.

Project Summary

Concise scope, objectives, timeline, budget, and high-level outcomes so reviewers can quickly understand context without consulting separate records.

Performance Metrics

Key measures such as schedule variance, budget variance, scope changes, quality metrics, and stakeholder satisfaction captured with dates and numeric values.

Root-Cause Analysis

Structured analysis (5 Whys, fishbone) showing evidence and causal links rather than opinions; supports targeted corrective actions.

Lessons Learned

Practical observations and process changes categorized by team, tools, procurement, and communication to inform future projects.

Action Plan

Assigned owners, due dates, priority, and acceptance criteria for each corrective action or process change item to ensure closure.

Approvals & Archive

Common Preparation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Failing to assign single owners for action items, leading to unresolved recommendations and process drift.
  • Using subjective language without metrics, making the critique hard to verify or to audit during reviews.
  • Neglecting to preserve version history and approvals, which reduces the record’s admissibility for governance or legal review.
