What the Retirement Planning Checklist Is

The Retirement Planning Checklist is a structured document that helps individuals and their advisors collect, verify, and organize the information needed to plan for retirement. It typically captures personal identification, account balances (IRAs, 401(k)s, pensions), Social Security estimates, insurance policies, beneficiary designations, estate documents, income and expense summaries, and a prioritized action list with target dates for tasks like beneficiary updates, required distributions, and coordinating custodian paperwork.

Why a Checklist Matters for Retirement Outcomes

A well-constructed Retirement Planning Checklist reduces the risk of missed beneficiary updates, tax reporting errors, and delayed distributions. It clarifies action items, aligns advisors and custodians, and documents decisions for legal and tax review while improving accuracy during life events or plan transitions.

Why a Checklist Matters for Retirement Outcomes

Who Typically Completes the Checklist

Typical users include individuals planning retirement, financial advisors, estate attorneys, and HR or benefits administrators who gather and verify retirement details.

  • Individuals — track assets, beneficiaries, income projections, and action items for retirement readiness.
  • Financial advisors — consolidate client data, run projections, and prepare distribution strategies and tax notes.
  • Employers/HR — maintain plan records, verify contributions, and support benefit elections during transitions.

Use cases include initial retirement planning, annual reviews, pre-distribution checks, and estate coordination to reduce administrative friction and legal risk.

Representative Roles Who Use This Checklist

Financial Advisor — CFP

A certified financial planner uses the checklist to collect client account balances, beneficiary designations, tax documents, and projected income needs. They rely on accurate entries to prepare distribution strategies, coordinate with custodians, and document recommended action timelines for compliance and client review.

Individual — Retiree

An individual completing the checklist gathers Social Security estimates, IRAs and employer plan statements, insurance policies, and estate documents. Accurate entries ensure correct beneficiary routing, reduce probate risk, and support tax reporting and distribution timing during retirement transitions.

Core Sections to Include in a Professional Checklist

An effective Retirement Planning Checklist covers identity, account balances, income sources, insurance, estate documents, beneficiary designations, and action timelines to coordinate retirement steps for individuals and advisors.

Personal Information

Enter full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, current address, phone and email. Include marital status and dependents to determine benefits eligibility and tax filing status; note any durable powers of attorney.

Financial Accounts

List all retirement and non-retirement accounts with institution, account number, current balance, and custodian contact. Include IRAs, 401(k)s, pensions, brokerage accounts, and annuities so advisors can calculate net worth and distribution planning.

Income & Expenses

Document current income sources, expected retirement income, monthly living expenses, and projected changes. Include Social Security estimates, pension amounts, rental income, and anticipated healthcare costs for accurate cashflow modeling.

Insurance & Benefits

Record life, disability, long-term care, and health insurance policies, policy numbers, coverage amounts, beneficiary names, and claim contacts. Note employer benefits, retiree health options, and Medicare enrollment plans.

Estate Documents

Attach wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and advance healthcare directives. Verify notarization and witness requirements, and ensure beneficiary designations align with estate instruments to avoid probate complications.
