What the RVT Services Agreement Covers

An RVT Services Agreement is a written contract that sets out the scope, responsibilities, payment terms, and legal obligations between a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or veterinary services provider and a clinic, hospital, or client. The agreement typically defines services to be performed, scheduling and on-call expectations, independent contractor versus employee status, confidentiality and patient privacy obligations, insurance and indemnity, termination rights, and dispute resolution. It ensures both parties understand licensing, supervisory requirements, and documentation obligations related to animal care and controlled substances.

Why a Formal RVT Services Agreement Matters

A written RVT Services Agreement reduces ambiguity about duties, limits liability, confirms compliance with veterinary licensing rules, and documents payment and termination terms to prevent disputes and regulatory risk.

Why a Formal RVT Services Agreement Matters

Who Typically Prepares and Signs This Agreement

RVT Services Agreements are used by clinics, solo practitioners, mobile veterinary services, and licensed RVTs arranging employment or independent contractor engagements.

  • Private veterinary clinics hiring RVTs for in-clinic or surgical support services, often to define supervision and shift coverage.
  • Mobile or house-call providers engaging RVTs as contractors for outreach, sedation assistance, or emergency triage.
  • RVTs contracting directly with clinics or networks to set hourly rates, liability insurance obligations, and confidentiality terms.

Parties should ensure the agreement reflects the applicable state scope-of-practice rules and any employer policies governing controlled drugs, recordkeeping, and client consent.

Essential Clauses to Include in an RVT Services Agreement

A professional agreement organizes obligations and reduces regulatory exposure by specifying key clauses and operational details.

Scope of Services

Describe specific clinical duties (e.g., anesthesia monitoring, lab draws, patient restraint), supervisory requirements, and any tasks the RVT is prohibited from performing under state law.

Compensation

State hourly or flat fees, invoicing cadence, reimbursements for supplies or travel, and late-payment terms, including how overtime or after-hours calls are compensated.

Licensure and Certifications

Require proof of current RVT licensure or certification, continuing education obligations, and immediate notice if credentials lapse or disciplinary action occurs.

Confidentiality / HIPAA

Include client/patient privacy and data handling provisions; where human data or overlap exists, reference HIPAA safeguards and any required business associate addenda.

Insurance and Indemnity

Specify professional liability and general liability minimums, who carries coverage, and indemnification for negligent acts or regulatory fines.

Termination and Notice

Define termination for convenience or cause, required notice periods, final payments, return of records, and post-termination obligations such as client notification.
