What a Stunt Stipulations Agreement Covers

A Stunt Stipulations Agreement is a written contract used in film, television, and live production to document the terms, safety protocols, and responsibilities for stunt performers and coordinators. The agreement defines the scope of each stunt, required rehearsals and safety gear, chain of command on set, medical and emergency procedures, compensation and travel, insurance and indemnity terms, and any special certifications or training required. Well-drafted stipulations reduce ambiguity about risk allocation and support compliance with union, insurer, and employer requirements on U.S. productions.

Why this Agreement Matters for Productions

A clear Stunt Stipulations Agreement allocates risk, documents safety measures, and clarifies payment and medical arrangements, which helps reduce liability and supports insurance and union compliance.

Why this Agreement Matters for Productions

Who typically completes and signs this agreement

The agreement is completed collaboratively by production and stunt personnel to ensure shared understanding before stunt work begins.

  • Producers and production managers: prepare terms, confirm budgets, and ensure contract routing to payroll and insurance.
  • Stunt coordinators and performers: confirm technical details, rehearsal schedules, equipment, and safety staff required.
  • Production legal and insurance representatives: review indemnity, coverage limits, and any union-mandated clauses.

Signatures from the stunt performer, stunt coordinator, and an authorized production representative finalize the arrangement and make the record enforceable.

Essential sections every professional Stunt Stipulations Agreement should include

A complete agreement addresses responsibilities, safety measures, compensation, insurance, emergency procedures, and any show-specific constraints or exceptions so all parties have a clear, enforceable record.

Scope

Describe each stunt or series of stunts in specific terms, including location, timing, stunt type, and any special effects or vehicles involved to avoid later disputes.

Safety Protocols

List required safety equipment, rigging standards, required personnel (e.g., medic, stunt riggers), rehearsal time, and who signs off on safety checks before execution.

Roles & Responsibilities

Specify the stunt coordinator, performer duties, on-set authority, reporting structure, and who makes final go/no-go calls for each stunt.

Compensation

State flat fees or day rates, overtime rules, travel and per diem, invoicing terms, and any bonuses or penalties tied to schedule changes or cancellations.

Insurance & Indemnity

Detail required insurance types and limits, which party carries coverage, indemnification language, and procedures for submitting claims after injury or damage.

Medical & Emergency

Record pre-existing conditions, required medical clearances, emergency contact information, on-site medical resources, and transport arrangements for injuries.

Consequences of incorrect or incomplete stipulations

Tax Penalties: IRS reporting fines possible
Intentional Disregard: Higher IRC §6721 penalty
I-9 Violations: Paperwork fines apply
Insurance Denial: Claims may be denied
Workers' Comp: Coverage disputes can arise
Safety Violations: Regulatory fines or shutdowns

Common mistakes to avoid when preparing stipulations

  • Leaving stunt descriptions vague or grouped under a single line item, which can invalidate coverage or lead to disputes about what was agreed.
  • Using inconsistent or informal names that differ from payroll or insurance records; mismatched names can delay payment and claims processing.
  • Omitting specific insurance policy numbers or coverage limits; insurers regularly deny claims when policy details are incomplete.
  • Failing to document required rehearsals, safety checks, and who authorized the go/no-go decision before executing a high-risk stunt.

Real-world examples of how stipulations are used

Two illustrative scenarios show typical production uses: a controlled vehicle stunt and a high-fall sequence, emphasizing safety and insurance alignment.

Vehicle Stunt Example

A mid-budget TV production documented vehicle speed, route, and chase choreography in the stipulations.

  • The coordinator required a trained driver and two rehearsals.
  • The agreement clarified insurance limits, named the approved rigging vendor, and required an on-site medic before any camera moves were authorized, which prevented scheduling delays.

High-Fall Sequence

A feature film recorded exact drop heights, harness specs, and net placement in the stipulation.

  • The performer provided medical clearance and prior experience.
  • The document required sign-off from the stunt coordinator and insurer before the fall, and it included post-incident reporting procedures to streamline any follow-up claims.

Typical signer roles and their authority

Stunt Coordinator

Leads technical planning and on-set safety decisions. The coordinator confirms rehearsals, approves rigging and protective equipment, and has authority to halt the stunt if conditions are unsafe.

Production Representative

Authorized production signatory (line producer or unit production manager) who binds the production to payment, insurance, and indemnity provisions included in the agreement.

Practical tips for accurate and efficient completion

Adopt clear drafting conventions, use consistent names and dates, confirm insurance details up front, and keep a central signed copy accessible to key stakeholders.

Standardize Language
Use consistent clause headings and plain-language descriptions for stunts. Standard templates reduce negotiation time and avoid ambiguity about responsibilities or technical requirements.
Verify Insurance Early
Obtain carrier contact, policy numbers, and certificate of insurance before first rehearsal. Verifying limits in advance prevents last-minute production halts.
Document Safety Sign-offs
Require pre-stunt safety checklists and documented go/no-go sign-offs. Preserve these records with the signed agreement to support claims or investigations.
Use Audit Trails
When using electronic signatures, ensure the platform captures timestamps, IP addresses, and authentication method to prove intent and attribution.
