What a Supplemental Financial Donor Agreement Is

A Supplemental Financial Donor Agreement documents additional or changed financial commitments between a donor and a recipient organization after an initial gift or grant agreement. It records the donor's intent, any restrictions or designated purposes, payment schedules, reporting requirements, and conditions for use of funds. The supplemental agreement clarifies expectations for stewardship, supports internal controls for finance and compliance, and creates an auditable record for donors, nonprofit finance teams, and auditors. Where permitted, electronic execution and storage under ESIGN and state UETA laws make remote completion practical and defensible.

Why a Supplemental Agreement Matters to Donors and Organizations

A clear supplemental agreement reduces ambiguity about donor intent, protects restricted funds, and documents reporting obligations for tax and audit purposes.

Why a Supplemental Agreement Matters to Donors and Organizations

Who Typically Completes a Supplemental Financial Donor Agreement

Typical users include both donor representatives and organizational staff responsible for gift acceptance and finance.

  • Donor representatives and foundation program officers who specify restrictions, schedules, and recognition preferences.
  • Development and gift-processing teams responsible for receipting, accounting entries, and donor stewardship.
  • Finance, grants, or compliance officers who track restricted balances and required reporting.

Accurate completion ensures legal clarity and enables consistent financial controls across gift administration and audit processes.
