What the Tailoring Services Agreement Covers

A Tailoring Services Agreement is a written contract that records the relationship between a client and a tailor or alteration service. It defines parties, the garment or item descriptions, work scope (measurements, fittings, alterations), delivery schedules, pricing, deposit and payment terms, acceptance criteria, and remedies for defects or delays. The agreement also allocates risk for lost or damaged items, sets expectations for additional charges (fit changes, fabric sourcing), and identifies governing law and dispute resolution. Use it whenever custom work or alterations create binding obligations between customer and provider.

Why a Written Agreement Matters for Tailoring Work

A clear agreement protects both parties by documenting expectations, timelines, costs, and remedies in case of disputes.

Who Typically Uses a Tailoring Services Agreement

The agreement is suitable for one-off jobs and recurring client relationships where measurement, deposit, and acceptance terms reduce operational risk.

  • Independent tailors and small alteration shops offering bespoke or made-to-measure services for local clients.
  • Bridal and formalwear specialists handling multi-fitting projects and third-party vendor coordination.
  • Retailers or boutiques offering in-house alteration services associated with clothing sales.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Vague scope descriptions such as 'adjust as needed' without defining number of fittings or specific tolerances.
  • Failure to document deposits and refund policies, which can create collection or consumer-protection issues.
  • Not retaining proof of customer acceptance after delivery, making warranty or quality disputes harder to resolve.

Risks and Potential Consequences of Errors

Customer Disputes: Chargebacks or refund demands
Lost Items: Liability for replacement or repair
Regulatory Fines: Consumer protection violations
Reputational Harm: Negative reviews and lost sales
Collection Costs: Legal or collection expenses
Tax Record Issues: Incorrect reporting or missing receipts
