What an Assistant Principal Employment Contract Covers

An Assistant Principal Employment Contract is a written agreement between a school district (or private school) and an assistant principal that defines the position, duties, compensation, benefits, work schedule, length of employment, evaluation process, and conditions for termination or renewal. It sets expectations for performance, reporting lines, disciplinary procedures, and any supplemental responsibilities such as extracurricular supervision. The contract may be fixed-term or at-will depending on district policy and state law. Clear written terms reduce misunderstandings and form the baseline for personnel actions, payroll, and benefits administration.

Why a Written Contract Matters for Assistant Principals

A clear contract protects both the administrator and the employer by documenting duties, compensation, evaluation criteria, and grounds for termination. It supports consistent personnel decisions, compliance with employment law, and accurate payroll and benefits processing.

Why a Written Contract Matters for Assistant Principals

Typical Parties Involved and Their Roles

The contract is completed by district HR or legal counsel and signed by the assistant principal and an authorized district official.

  • District human resources — prepares template, ensures policy alignment, and tracks signatures.
  • School leaders and principals — confirm duties, reporting structure, and supplemental assignments.
  • Legal counsel or general counsel — reviews contract language for compliance and risk mitigation.

Final signatures should be stored in personnel files and shared with payroll and benefits administrators.
