The oil producers would face a much greater challenge with the market price for oil, and thus the value for all petroleum product producers of crude oil, currently hovering around 75 a barrel. At some point, the price of oil products is going to turn up, which is where the problem comes in. Because of supply and demand fundamentals, which are determined by a combination of global and domestic economic drivers, the oil companies have already taken measures to hedge their costs. Oil producers will need to do the same, in order to stay competitive in this low market price environment. One of these measures already being taken is the exploration/development of offshore oil fields. The current downturn in oil markets is forcing energy companies to take on more debt to get through this slump. A large portion of the recent oil price drop has been due to the oil companies finding their revenues drying up. With revenues that have declined by over 100 billion since 2010, the companies have to find more cost-effective ways to get the cash flow back they're looking for. Since oil has the highest marginal cost per unit produced, a drop in oil is being driven by companies cutting costs. When oil prices drop, it is often an oil producer's best solution to cut costs by cutting costs by cutting costs to maintain production at the existing level, since production is the largest expense.
