What the Employee Comp Time Amendment Is and When It’s Used

An Employee Comp Time Amendment is a written modification to an existing wage and hour agreement that documents changes to how compensatory time off (comp time) is accrued, used, carried over, or paid out. It clarifies eligibility, accrual rates, maximum hours, and any conversion to cash at termination or separation. The amendment is typically attached to the original employment agreement or handbook and signed by authorized employer representatives and the affected employee. Use the amendment to record mutual agreement and to reduce disputes over earned comp time.

Why a Clear Amendment Matters for Employers and Employees

A written amendment reduces ambiguity about accrual, usage limits, and payout rules, lowering legal risk and payroll errors.

  • Not updating payroll systems or timekeeping rules after signing causes back pay errors and reconciliation headaches during audits.
  • Omitting clear approval and scheduling procedures increases operational friction and may result in unapproved time off being taken.
