What the HR COVID Addendum Is and When It Applies

The HR COVID Addendum is a short amendment attached to existing employment policies or offer letters that documents COVID-19–related changes to workplace safety, leave, testing, vaccination, remote work, or telehealth procedures. It records agreed adjustments to duties, temporary accommodations, or health-data handling procedures while preserving the underlying employment agreement. Employers commonly use this addendum to document short-term policy changes, confirm employee acknowledgment, and set a clear effective date and duration for COVID-specific rules without rewriting the main contract.

Why an HR COVID Addendum Matters for Employers and Employees

An HR COVID Addendum clarifies temporary health and safety obligations, documents consent to new procedures, and helps employers demonstrate consistent application of policies. Properly executed addenda support compliance with ESIGN (15 U.S.C. ch. 96) and UETA rules for electronic records and reduce disputes about effective dates and benefits during public-health events.

Employers should retain a signed copy for each affected employee and record the acknowledgment date to support future audits or personnel actions.
