What the HR Research Manager Template Is

The HR Research Manager Template is a structured document used to define a research manager role, project scope, deliverables, budget, timeline, reporting lines, and approval workflow. It standardizes candidate or role research outcomes, captures required authorizations, and creates a record for hiring, internal audit, or compliance reviews. The template can be adapted for internal hiring, external contractor engagement, or project-based research leads and typically includes signature blocks for HR, hiring managers, and legal review.

Why this Template Helps HR and Research Teams

Using a consistent HR Research Manager Template reduces ambiguity in role expectations, speeds approvals, and preserves a defensible record of decisions while supporting onboarding, audits, and budget tracking.

Why this Template Helps HR and Research Teams

Who Typically Completes and Approves This Template

The template is filled out by HR partners, hiring managers, or research leads and routed to stakeholders for review.

  • HR business partners who coordinate hiring, job design, and role documentation for compliance and internal records.
  • Research managers or project leads who define scope, deliverables, timelines, and resource needs for the position.
  • Finance or budget owners who approve headcount, budget allocations, and any contractor spend associated with the role.

Final approvers may include HR leadership, legal counsel, finance, and the authorized hiring manager.

Core Sections to Include in a Professional Template

A professional HR Research Manager Template groups role details, project scope, approvals, and administrative metadata to facilitate review, compliance, and onboarding.

Role Summary

Concise job purpose, primary responsibilities, required experience, and reporting relationships to set clear expectations for the role and reviewers.

Scope & Deliverables

Project objectives, measurable deliverables, milestones, and acceptance criteria so research outputs and success metrics are explicit and actionable.

Budget & Resources

Authorized budget range, headcount vs contractor breakdown, and resource needs (software, data access, subscriptions) tied to approvals.

Timeline & Milestones

Start date, key milestone dates, expected completion, and any phased deliverables to coordinate cross-functional dependencies.

Approvals & Signatures

Designation of required approvers, signature blocks, and versioning information to record who authorized the hire or engagement.

Compliance Notes

Data handling instructions, confidentiality obligations, and links to applicable policies (e.g., HIPAA or FERPA constraints where relevant).

Step-by-Step: Complete and Route the Template

Follow a linear approval flow to reduce rework and preserve an auditable trail from draft to final sign-off.
