What the Student Intern Expectations document is

A Student Intern Expectations document sets out the roles, responsibilities, schedules, supervision, confidentiality, safety rules, and administrative requirements that apply to a student participating in an internship. It clarifies start and end dates, reporting relationships, deliverables, working hours, compensation or credit terms, and any training or compliance obligations the intern must meet during the placement.

Purpose and legal basis for using an expectations form

This document reduces ambiguity about duties and legal exposure by recording mutual obligations, protecting confidential information, and documenting supervision and training. Electronically executed agreements are generally enforceable under the ESIGN Act (15 U.S.C. §7001) and state UETA laws, subject to statutory exceptions such as wills or certain court orders.
