What the Student Mentee Agreement Is and When It Applies

A Student Mentee Agreement documents the mentoring relationship between a student (mentee) and an advisor, mentor, or program coordinator. It defines roles, objectives, expected activities, confidentiality, intellectual property treatment, duration, and termination conditions. The agreement clarifies deliverables, meeting cadence, and any academic or administrative responsibilities, and it can be used by schools, research labs, internship programs, and student organizations to set clear expectations and reduce disputes.

Why a Written Agreement Matters for Mentoring

A formal Student Mentee Agreement reduces misunderstandings, documents consent to program rules, and supports academic or administrative review. It protects parties by specifying obligations, timelines, confidentiality, and dispute resolution.

Why a Written Agreement Matters for Mentoring

Who typically completes a Student Mentee Agreement

Organizations and individuals rely on this agreement to formalize mentoring relationships and manage accountability.

  • University programs and faculty advisors coordinating supervised research and course-based projects.
  • Internship coordinators and industry mentors setting learning objectives and deliverables.
  • Student clubs or peer-mentoring programs documenting expectations and privacy commitments.

Use the agreement when a mentorship involves academic credit, access to facilities, sensitive data, or multi-party responsibilities.

Follow these steps to prepare and finalize the agreement so all parties understand responsibilities and timelines.

  • 01

  • 03
Add signatures: Include signers, signature dates, and witness or notary fields if required.
  • 04
Distribute copies: Provide each party a signed copy and retain for records.
