What a Student Trial Lesson Agreement Covers

The Student Trial Lesson Agreement outlines terms for a single introductory instructional session between a teacher or school and a prospective student or the student's guardian. It documents the lesson date, duration, fees or refund policy for the trial, safety and conduct expectations, and any materials or equipment responsibilities. The agreement clarifies cancellation, rescheduling, and payment terms, and records consent for communications and photography where applicable. When signed by both parties, it creates a short-term binding commitment governing the trial lesson.

Why use a written trial lesson agreement

Use a Student Trial Lesson Agreement to set expectations, reduce disputes, and document consent and payment terms for a single introductory lesson. Clear written terms protect both instructor and family and simplify follow-up if additional lessons are scheduled.

Why use a written trial lesson agreement

Who typically completes this agreement

Teachers, private instructors, music schools, and tutoring centers use this agreement for time-limited trial lessons and to record payment terms.

  • Private music teachers offering one-off trial sessions with families before committing to recurring lessons.
  • Tutoring centers documenting trial lesson feedback, attendance, and next-step enrollment decisions.
  • Online instructors using recorded sessions, cancellation policies, and consent for video or screen sharing.

Parents, guardians, and adult learners sign to acknowledge expectations, liability limits, and any follow-up scheduling or billing arrangements.

Core clauses to include in a professional trial agreement

Essential clauses for a Student Trial Lesson Agreement ensure clarity on scope, payment, liability, scheduling, privacy, and signature validity to prevent later disputes.

Cancellation

Define notice period, rescheduling options, deadlines for full or partial refunds, and instructor cancellation procedures due to illness or emergency and how credits for future lessons are applied.

Liability

Limit liability for minor injuries, specify supervision expectations, require guardians to inform instructors of medical conditions, and recommend emergency contact procedures and insurance responsibility.

Mistakes to avoid when preparing the agreement

  • Failing to record guardian consent leads to disputes over medical needs, session responsibility, and billing, especially when the student is a minor.
  • Using ambiguous refund language such as 'may refund' creates interpretation issues and inconsistent application across multiple trial bookings.
  • Not specifying virtual platform details or link validity times results in missed sessions or access problems for remote lessons.
  • Neglecting to capture payment receipts and transaction IDs complicates refunds and reconciliation for instructors managing multiple trial students.
