Terms, Duties, and Academic Conditions

The student agrees to perform the duties of an understudy as assigned by the supervising faculty member or production lead. Duties include, but are not limited to, attending all required rehearsals and calls, learning principal role material, and being available for substitution in the event the principal is unable to perform. Failure to comply with reasonable rehearsal obligations may result in removal from the understudy assignment and may affect academic credit.

Academic credit, where awarded, is contingent on satisfactory fulfillment of rehearsal attendance, preparation standards, and final performance participation as determined by the supervising instructor. The supervising instructor's evaluation is final for the purposes of awarding course credit and assessment of satisfactory completion.

Legal Provisions and Policies

Confidentiality: The student shall maintain confidentiality of any proprietary production materials, scripts, scores, choreography, or instructional materials disclosed during the assignment. Unauthorized recording or distribution of materials is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action and liability for damages.

Intellectual Property: Except as otherwise provided in writing, the institution retains all rights to curricular materials and recorded performances produced as part of the assignment. The student grants the institution a perpetual, royalty-free right to use recordings or images of rehearsals and performances for educational, promotional, or archival purposes.

Liability and Release: The student acknowledges the inherent risks associated with rehearsals and performances. To the extent permitted by applicable law, the student releases the institution, its trustees, employees, and agents from liability for personal injury arising from ordinary risks of participation, except where such injury is caused by gross negligence or willful misconduct.

Termination and Modification

Either party may terminate this Agreement for cause upon written notice specifying the reason for termination. Where practicable, the institution will provide the student with at least days' notice prior to removal from the assignment. The institution reserves the right to modify rehearsal schedules and performance assignments with reasonable notice.

Compliance and Certification

The student certifies that the information provided in this Agreement is true and complete to the best of their knowledge. The student agrees to comply with all institutional policies, codes of conduct, and health and safety protocols applicable to the assignment.

What a Student Understudy Agreement Covers

A Student Understudy Agreement records the terms when one student agrees to serve as an understudy or substitute for another student in an academic, clinical, or performance setting. Typical items include the parties, covered role or duties, schedule, supervision, compensation or credit, confidentiality, liability allocation, and required signatures. The document clarifies rights and duties for the understudy, the primary student or assignment holder, and institutional representatives, and can be executed electronically consistent with U.S. e‑signature law.

Why institutions and students use this agreement

The agreement creates a clear record of responsibilities, timing, supervision, and any credit or compensation, reducing disputes and enabling proper administrative and compliance handling under ESIGN and UETA when signed electronically.
