foreign throughout the semester we are looking at Amazon as our case study so as we talk about human resource management and we talk about uh other decisions that managers make we're going to be evaluating Amazon um in terms of of their management and so you are in charge of Amazon and your job is then to reflect on previous management decisions and make recommendations for future management so as we look at Amazon we're going to look at a number of different articles and videos that have come out related to Amazon and so Amazon's been in the news a lot lately and particularly in terms of their human resource management and so there's an article from Vox and it talks about a New York Times article which talks about a number of scandals that Amazon has and then also looks at the Defenders of Amazon and so this Fox News article basically says both the New York Times and Amazon agree one that working at Amazon is intense two it used to be even more intense and three some horrible unacceptable things have happened at Amazon in the past so what we want you to do then as you are looking at Amazon is our case study is evaluating management decisions and tying into the theory we've been discussing so let's go into some of the things in the news as you start to think about Amazon is our case study so we have a link here to the New York Times article the employment machine the Amazon that customers don't see and it goes into detail in terms of what it's like to work at Amazon so check out that article and then there's a number of other articles that have come out so as we're going through some of these and as you dig deeper examine the HR management approaches of Amazon what motivational theories does Amazon subscribe to and why do you think so what are the compensation and benefits that you get for Amazon and here's a link to the what Amazon has shared examine the unionization attempt at Amazon as we look at Amazon what has their Human Resource Management done right what has done wrong how would you improve Amazon if you were in charge and then what are some limitations that would prevent you from implementing your plan because when we quarterback other people's decisions we often have this ideal utopian view of things so yeah you know things be perfect here's what I would do but there's probably reasons that that utopian version doesn't exist to start with so what might prevent you from implementing the plan that you've envisioned so let's go through some of the News That's related to Amazon as you start to think about the answers to these questions for our course project so here and I'll put a link um is a um advertisement from Amazon where Amazon celebrates its employee promotions so why does Amazon feel compelled to issue commercials that talk about its employees being promoted well it's because news articles have posted have shown that the median tenure at Amazon is just one year so half of the employees at Amazon don't stay longer than one year now to Amazon's credit at Google it's not that much better uh it's only about 1.1 years and what's happened uh in recent news articles they've been talking about how Amazon is running out of people to hire so if they burn through employees so quickly if the typical person is only staying a year then they're constantly hiring new people well the problem Amazon's having is they're running out of new people to hire they've basically hired anybody and everybody who's willing to work at Amazon within the geographic region and not able to find new workers so is Amazon burning out their Workforce now there's another article here from Amazon and AD from Amazon and this one's about career choice so Amazon offers training in high demand career paths like healthcare Transportation information technology so in other words they'll help you pay your tuition costs um as you're going to school you can work for Amazon and we do see this with other companies like McDonald's they'll help pay for some of the college so they recognize that maybe Amazon is not your long-term plan or maybe McDonald's isn't your long-term career plan that you want to be a doctor or you want to be an I.T and so they're supporting people uh through their studies while they're working in their program now at the same time we see articles that talk about you know Amazon's hiring practices this article talks about how Amazon has a school to Amazon warehouse pipeline that they are hiring formerly incarcerated people and underprivileged students to come work for Amazon so from Amazon's perspective this is a good story because they're creating opportunities for people who otherwise might find it difficult to be employed and then if we tie that to the advertisements in the previous slide we're creating opportunities for these people to then further their careers even Beyond Amazon to the critics of Amazon by tapping into these pools of employees they're trying to get around unionization by picking particularly vulnerable groups who might be less likely to join the unions uh because uh Amazon's giving them opportunities and so they don't want to go against the company that's providing those opportunities so if we look at Amazon there's been a number of attempts the last couple years in terms of unionization of Amazon so there's lots of articles in terms of Union votes the concerns of the critics of Amazon is that there has been anti-union activities by the organization such as calling meetings that are you know shift meetings that then just turn into a union bashing activity talking about how terrible the union is and there's been PR issues for Amazon where there's articles have come out like this one here where it says Amazon tells warehouse workers they can they get to dress up instead of getting the day off for Juneteenth so Juneteenth uh in uh 2022 it was a newly established holiday in the U.S uh recognizing um the end of slavery in the United States and instead of Amazon workers getting the day off they were told they could dress up for the day so not being conscious of the the image the uh the pr uh in some of the decisions have impacted Amazon as well we hear stories about Amazon workers walking off the job calling for better pay better working conditions there's been articles in terms of of anti-union behavior there's been issues of workers dying on the job and so as we evaluate the human resource management of Amazon if you were in charge of Amazon how would you structure it and it comes back to our discussion in terms of motivation so remember as we talk about motivation do your employees have the ability so training resources skills do they have the proper motivation so do they have enough energy is that energy in the right direction do they have persistence combine those create performance is a performance so effort tied to Performance performance tied rewards and do the rewards meet the needs of the employees and again we go back to the role of HR recruiting are we recruiting the right people is our methods in recruiting effective how are we doing in terms of training and development how are we doing in terms of compensation and benefits is the job enticing for people and then how are we doing in terms of employee relations are we retaining a good employees are they staying is there opportunities for that professional development to move up in the organization one of the complaints as we look at Amazon is that a very few people move up into management they essentially get burnt out and then new people get hired and there's not that upward Mobility that some people are looking for and then we look at Performance Management does Amazon do a good job in terms of evaluating the work and performance of its employees is it matching that performance the effort and performance and performance and reward um isn't doing a good job in terms of assessing employees so if we do things like measure uh the amount of items a person processes is that an effective method for how good of an employee is or is there something else we should be looking at in terms of measuring employee performance so as you go through these uh different articles different ads look at the HR management and the different components for that are we uh being effective I just lost couple of slides here this one is an advertisement thinking Amazon Heroes so individuals working hard during covid to make sure everyone has the items that they ordered this ad comes out of course the same time that we have Amazon workers dying on the job um and is there an issue then with the working conditions being unsafe and then lastly here as we look at the priorities of the organization in terms of Performance Management what is it we are looking for in terms of our effective employees and does that match then what we're doing as an organization so here we're looking for leaders who are customer obsessed who are curious who are frugal who are have the highest standards who think big who can invent who can deliver results is that what behavior is being rewarded um in terms of the organization rewarding Management in terms of management rewarding employees this is so do we have alignment how well is the human resources of Amazon being managed uh so two more slides here related to this um how Amazon automatically tracks and fires warehouse workers for productivity so again in terms of the evaluation they're looking at the number of units that are moving through per hour and how quickly you're doing your job and that's what's used to determine whether or not you are retained as a worker so there's lots of comments there's lots of articles about Amazon and issues they've had at the same time that we hear all of this we also recognize that there are ratings on companies like Glassdoor which have people rate their employer and the rating for Amazon is 3.4 out of five and um you know that's up from from 2015 and not totally inconsistent with other jobs that we see across the industry so recognizing that it seems to be people seem to be willing to work for this organization at the same time it seems to have some challenges in terms of its Human Resource Management so as we continue our videos we'll look at other aspects of Amazon but start to think of and I'll go back to the instructions here how well is Amazon doing in terms of human resource management in terms of recruiting in terms of training and development compensation and benefits employee relations including unions as well as Performance Management and how well are they doing in terms of motivating employees to get the best performance out of those employees
