so you want to hire a roofer I bet you're stressed out we don't have the best reputation out there hi I am Amy feller I'm the roofer chick and today on our tailgate talk we're going to talk about what should you look for when you're hiring a roofer first of all especially if you're in a storm market make sure that your roofer is local and with technology today contractors can appear to be local and not really be local it's very easy to take out a local phone number you can have business cards printed within 24 hours that say you're local you can say anything you want so you really need to do some digging and make sure that they have customers in your local area and that they've been there for a while you want to make sure that they're carrying insurance there's a lot of people out there that don't ask to see a copy of it any reputable roofer would be more than willing to give you a copy of their insurance and make sure that it's not expired make sure that they're transparent when you ask about their process or what they do or how they operate get that feeling of trust trust your gut go with your intuition if you are filing an insurance claim if you're just paying cash it doesn't matter so much but if you are filing an insurance claim or going through insurance make sure that they have Xactimate training so that they can work with your insurance what's Xactimate it's a software that most not all but most of the insurance companies out there used to write up the damage for your roof and decide how they're going to pay you and how much check their reviews make sure they have good reviews make sure they have lots of good reviews not just three from Aunt Betty check and ask for their referrals they should be more than willing to give you a referral list of customers that they've done in the area and actually go ahead and call those people see what they have to say make sure that they're with the BBB and that they're accredited and look at the reviews on the BBB and make sure that they've been there for a while because that's something you cannot fake they're pretty strict you want to make sure and check most roofers are accredited with some manufacturer some with more than one manufacturer if you have your heart set on a certain manufacturer you might want to make sure that they're accredited contractor for that manufacturer we are GAF certified and we're also with owens corning and tamko cu label on to any organization see that's part of just seeing if they're legit there's our cat here in Texas there's another one that's escaping me but our cat is registered contracts contractor Association of Texas there that's what it is and then a lot of times your insurance company I'll ask if your roofing contractor is licensed well here's a thing unfortunately in Texas roofers don't have to be licensed there is no roofing license and it's unfortunate your plumbers your HVAC your electrician's they all have to have licenses but in Texas your roofer doesn't and so anybody with a hammer and a truck or a Volkswagen bug can go out there and say they're a roofing contractor our cat actually offers a license you have to take a test and pass it and do so much training every year so it's good to find an our cat contractor and then the last thing I would say is ask them if you can speak with some of their problem customers because let's face it any contractor out there everything isn't going to go perfect every single day so what does your contractor do when it doesn't go right and how do those customers feel about them at the end of the process that's what I would do for sure and that right there things that you should be looking at when you're hiring a roofing contractor or perhaps almost any contractor [Music]
