Seal sign
what's going on guys it is rachel here back again with another amazing video from makers gonna learn your ultimate die cutting community today we're gonna be talking all about ceiling signs that you're gonna put outside so ceiling vinyl for outdoor signs and things like that really anything that you put vinyl on that you want to stick outside or you want it to last forever this is the video that you guys need to watch we're going to be walking you through different ways you can do this if you would like to and then i'll be demonstrating my favorite way my preferred way to do that on a side so how to seal an outdoor sign for you guys today now this is not just this type of sign that i'm doing this is if you have wood if you have metal if you have plastic if you you know any type of sign that you guys have you can seal using one of these methods so i will show you exactly how to do that today and show you all the options that you have and things like that so the three products that we have today is spray polyurethane this is minwax brand and we are using clear satin today then we have dishwasher safe mod podge uh this is great stuff then we have minwax polycrylic this is like a clear satin water-based polycrylic this is kind of like this but not in a spray can and we do love that we love all of these for different types of signs so um yeah i mean the one that we're going to be using today is the polycrylic this is my preferred method for an outdoor sign i feel like it creates an incredible seal and you're the one that's applying it so you know exactly how much you're putting on there and things the downside about this guy which is why i wouldn't use him for outdoors is because he takes 28 days to cure now for dishwasher safe and guys you're probably laughing at me like well why would i want to put dishwasher safe mod podge on something that i'm not putting in the dishwasher so the reason for that is because even though this is branded for dishwasher safe products to put on uh it's incredible for other things it creates an incredible seal when it cures it is cured hard this vinyl is not going anywhere but it takes so darn long to cure so that's the reason we're not using this today although it does create a great seal the downside to this though is that you will see brush strokes so for us today we're using a cute little black sign we don't want to see our brush strokes as much so this poly acrylic does really well at uh hiding brush strokes and then you're probably saying well if you don't want brush strokes why don't you try the mid max polyurethane spray we totally could that's fine by us as well if you would rather do it this way this does not create as good of a seal as you do with the polyacrylic this is a great product we use it on all types of stuff to seal but if you're wanting to seal an outdoor sign something quick and simple like if you have a metal sign and you applied vinyl to metal then you guys should know vinyl applies to metal incredibly it sticks on there perfectly it's going to stay it made a great stick that's what you want to use this for something that you know is going to stick really well you just want to add a little layer of protection so that is what we have our spray polyurethane for it's a great product we use it very often and then this mod podge i would say is like for maybe like a a textured wood sign that you put vinyl on and the vinyl's sticking but not great and you really want to create a nice very thick heavy duty seal on there this is what you need to go for you need to layer it up with a mod podge now they do have outdoor mod podge that can work as well you can use dishwasher safe mod podge or outdoor mod podge whatever you would like to do those two products work really really well and they're basically the same thing um and then for projects like today where it's kind of a textured sign but the vinyl still stuck well and we're not super concerned about it being stuck on their heavy duty we just want to get a nice seal on there and we want a heavier seal than a couple of coats of this that's what this is for so we've covered all our bases on what these sealers are for um and you guys will be able to use your best judgment as you buy these products and you start using them you will realize well okay that looks like it's working better for that sign or i don't like that with that finish as much i don't like seeing the brush strokes on that you'll start using these and getting the hang of these and knowing exactly how you want to use them so that is what we recommend is you guys kind of trying it out and seeing which ones you want to use but for this sign today this is kind of like a a textured chalkboard top sign um then we have vinyl on there and we're gonna be using our polycrylic to seal it today okay so this is all that we're gonna need here today we have our sign we have uh some scrap paper on the back here just in case we get a little bit of this polycrylic um we don't we don't want to make a mess on our table here we have our polycrylic here this is just like the minwax water-based clear satin poly acrylic you can buy this in a larger thing we just have it in this little guy here i have a paintbrush this is a very very clean um soft bristle paint brush you want to make sure that you kind of you know wipe it off make sure it doesn't have any little fuzzies or anything on it make sure it's good and clean and dry and the bristles are super super soft if you had rough bristles you would be able to see more of your brush strokes and we don't want that and then we're also going to clean this guy with some rubbing alcohol here we have our alcohol pump and a paper towel here you always want to clean something before you seal it always always you always want to clean something before you put vinyl on it as well so we want the most success out of our projects so we're going to eliminate all the variables to have something go wrong which maybe there was some fuzzies on here and that would cause you know cause their fuzzies to get in her uh poly acrylic and you know make it not look so good so i'm gonna blow it off i see any little little things there and then we're gonna open this up so we're going to use the back end of our reverse tweezers here and then we're going to just apply so this is going to be super easy and you guys do not have to worry about sealing like the sides of the side or anything like that just the front is all you need to do we're just gonna do pretty light coats um light brushes we're not gonna like just dunk our brush in and slap some really thick coats on there we're just gonna take it light and slow and start at the top here and you want to make sure you're covering your decal properly as well so we're just going to go in here and go around here cover that decal well and you guys will get the hang of this once you buy this product and you see you know oh i this is pretty thin so i will need several coats or i need a different type of paint brush or i need to invest in some softer paint brushes or something like that you'll definitely get the hang of it as you start to use it as with anything it's really hard to describe how well it's going you know when you don't have it in your hand like it's hard for me to say you know how why this is so great on this type of sign or something you all just really need to purchase some and get uh in the groove of using it and what using what you use it on and stuff so let me try and angle it in the light where you can see it there we go so you can see where i have it and where i don't about halfway done there so i've just done a light coat there i'm being sure to fully cover the top of my sign here and one good thing about this polycrylic as well is that it doesn't show brush strokes near as much as the mod podge so you can also like if i accidentally kind of do like a swoosh up here and i don't clean it up later and make sure the brushstrokes are the same way it's not going to affect the outcome that much because you really can't see the brush strokes on here which is a big plus in my opinion so just take your time here you will be applying several coats to this um i recommend three like three is the lucky number for ceiling things three light coats are good one's not enough and two is just just okay like it's fine three is like the magic number so that is perfect so once you get it you can go around the edge and get all the stuff you missed and then go back out with your brush strokes to make sure all the edges are fine brush stroke wise looks great and then i'm going to pick it up and show you guys in the light if i can twist it over there you go you see so it has a nice even coat all around it it looks really really good and that is gonna matte it's gonna matte a little more since this is a satin it's not a gloss it'll kind of mat a little and look really really good and then after this dries guys i'll give it 30 minutes after it dries for 30 minutes you're just going to apply two more light coats okay just the same way you did here what did it take one minute to do it probably took one minute to do this so um you know use your best judgment if you think you want to put more on here put more on here after the third coat you it should kind of feel pretty darn smooth like you can't kind of feel the difference between what's not vinyl and what is vinyl you should be able to have a pretty smooth finish there if you want to add more coats add more coats it's really not going to hurt anything so that is really all that you do guys um again 30 minutes in between those coats really a lot touch there you know don't slather it on or anything and you're gonna be good to go how easy was that guys i told you it was so simple to seal your outdoor signs and again you have several different options to choose from i hope that you enjoyed all of this video and how i kind of explained which signs to use which on i demonstrated one for you guys i could demonstrate them all but it would take a while and it's really just better you guys can see me slap these on a number of projects it's really just gonna be better if i give you this type of information you can buy all these products they're really relatively inexpensive and you will be able to use these on multiple other things which i love and then you guys will be able to use them and get the hang of them and see what you like to use for which projects again after you apply a couple of coats let this dry this one is still drying for us and then you'll be able to uh let it dry completely i'll give it several hours maybe one or two days if you have that kind of time to give and then place it outside wherever you want it and have a great time enjoy it for as long as it'll last and i hope that you uh you know i hope that it lasts a long time for you i know it will all of these uh sealer options will last a long time i even have some vinyl decals outside and on my car and things like that that aren't sealed at all that are still holding up great years later so that just goes to show vinyl is great by itself it's a great product it'll stick to most things but if you want to give it a little extra help and hope that it'll stay you know sealed for a lot longer then you can do that thank you guys so much for watching again if you do not know about makers going to learn and you want to see all about our over 4 000 digital cut files 400 fonts amazing printable guides access to our members only facebook group free commercial licensing and so so much more click that very first link in the description below to see what you're missing give us a lot guys and leave us a comment down below if you guys have any questions about this any questions about the product about how i applied it anything like that let us know thanks so much guys and i'll see you in the next video bye
