Clark Kevin do you want to introduce yourself hi I'm Kevin Clark well now that we got that over with uh Kevin is one of my favorite um nerd Cadets uh in the New York City Cultural scene um work for I don't know just about everybody but you want to give us a quick uh by line what are you up to uh sure uh by day I work for new music USA uh for the last year or so I've been product managing our new Grant making platform for our website so that's live now you can go and follow awarded projects uh through the website the main point of this was to take Grant application and make it a hell of a lot easier for everybody so instead of you write us a letter and we either set it on fire or write you a check uh you make public facing web content and if we award it we publish it and give you marketing tools to go with it so the whole Act of Grant making and the act of curation come together and hopefully the process becomes more efficient more useful and a lot easier for everybody uh it's been a rolicking success so far the second round of uh project grants is open right now so if you want to go apply and you you have a composer you need for something maybe we can help you out now what's the URL for that Kevin uh that is new music usa.org now explain to me again why your system is better than my setting artists applications on fire I I I don't quite get it uh one the fire department doesn't turn up uh two it so we're we're not a foundation we do a lot of our own fundraising and we are constantly having to demonstrate our own value uh and to go along with that we're committed to maintaining and supporting and advocating for the new music Community as a whole and that means doing a lot more than writing checks that means using the power of those grants to bring people together to help put more butts in seats instead of just waiting for Grant reports and CX this is a catastrophe I don't know what happened I'm sorry I don't mean to interrupt like no it's cool just it got real the traditional skyo of a hair moment of of every uh episode it's terrible um hair is good I didn't mean to interrupt your um your litany Kevin um but this was this was important um that was pretty clutch I think I've basically wrapped up the litany I mean we the traditional Grant making process has a lot of cumbersome parts to it and we got rid of them very good great um Kevin I understand understand you're a big fan of romantic poetry uh I think it would be funny to do I'm not actually enough of a fan of romantic poetry to make good Shelly or Keats jokes I know I don't like them uh but I kind of love that idea I love the like rewrite Shelley Keats and Byron as if it were a Josh Rogan movie for those of our for both viewers who are wondering what we're talking about right or who don't follow the three of us on Twitter that's right very small V diagram you want to provide a bit more background on what romantic poetry is well it doesn't exist yet it can be defined by everyone it can be reinvented at at a moment's notice uh I think I think Sydney you started by noticing that romantic was to was one word that meant to things at least yes canonically uh yes uh no I I think I mentioned I had it occurred to me the other day that I I just really wanted to insert the phrase romanticized into uh you know a business meeting of some sort um and then I think um you responded um to some something to the effect of I think was it Tennison and Poe making out or something I don't quite recall what the and Keats yeah yes um and then we thought it would be funny um if uh that was actually a thing I I would totally buy a chatbook of romantic poetry like delicately printed on nice paper nium you could have a little Kickstarter it'd be fine it'd be great if anyone wants to take that idea over go go for it yeah any of our viewer wants to do that that one is for free welcome and that Noble viewers is why that thing two minutes ago was kind of funny mostly to us yeah um so you guys have an active Twitter presence you've been tweeting a lot of Articles recently um what what's the most interesting thing you've read this week uh right now I've been thinking a lot about the uh Diane Ragsdale post from this morning on her jumper blog uh in response to some stuff from Doug boric and from Liz crane about placemaking and favoring Community versus favoring art and how that may seem like a thing but is not really a thing and I'm actually like partway through writing like a 1500w response to go up on new music box in a couple hours because I was just like I'll just write that now and apparently my brain thinks in like 1500w blog posts look at my blog it's all it is and what was that URL oh that'll be on new music box uh which is this blog that we run apart from Grant making we also do journalism and dessert toppings and floor waxes and all sorts of Sydney what what uh what did he read particularly interesting this week well um you know I've been mostly following um the uh critical uh feedback and response to the um season finale of True Detective um which if you um you know like me were somewhat disappointed by um you know I think there's a lot of really great coverage in the New Yorker about this heavy-hitting issue about us being disappointed in Matthew MCC um I was personally very impressed with the virtuosity of his ability to um be knifed up a couple feet into the air and then headbutting a villain several times um but I'm sorry I'm ruining the any spoilers um but other than that the um the finale just didn't really cohere um so there's been a lot of really great critical dialogue about that important issue in the cultural sector that's what I've been following recently great I look forward to Kevin's blog post on that one as well I found out about this show from the hashtag True Detective season 2 which seems to just Beall followed by anything surreal and bizarre that has no connection with anything else on that hashtag and that is what I know about the TV show go Rec out it was a TV not IDE did you guys catch the uh Google article or the New York Times article about Google's hiring and how they're they're uh uh not waiting not looking at things like GPA and uh what what your your degrees are but more what what you've done with your knowledge I think that's a great argument for hiring dance Majors that's all I got yeah all right great well we've known for ages that musicians make great coders uh speaking of coding uh for you artists who are interested in software developer fellowships uh fract Alis has three um available this summer so get your appc and what's that URL Tim I like your role today URL guy yeah sure fine trying to keep it real for the two people who are watching yeah fracture at.org it's a three it's a $5,000 Fellowship uh for three months working with our senior developers um spending some time with Ruby on Rails right now do those um people actually have to interview with you are you hiring these people because I mean I know that interviewing you is being interviewed by you is um kind of easy I guess super super easy kind of a yes they they would not interview with me um because I don't know anything about software development uh languages so it would be a very awkward interview um they would actually be interviewing with um our two senior developers Gary and Sean yeah are are you feeding Gary and Shan lines um like recommended things to ask I mean you're okay for the people who don't know Tim's um hiring practices the dude's a monster and has uh is is notorious for a Hardball interviewing style did you say that's correct Tim Kevin anybody guys I met Tim like five minutes ago and so far this has been an easy one yeah this we we should start over on this one the best interiew ever learn here and try it again great this is perfect uh interviews are a little tough sometimes um depending on what position you're interviewing for um but I I hope it's enjoyable all the same U but they can be a little intense yeah yes your main site's not rails right now is it uh there's a little PHP in the mix M over to rails application or getting it all on one stack or uh several of the programs that we have things like artfully and spaces um they're built on Rails and then we have some Legacy PHP in the mix okay I gotta say that was very convincing Legacy PHP in the mix I mean that sounds very smooth that was great I mean that was sometimes you know enough to be dangerous but I was gonna not yeah yeah was great I'm deep in the Danger Zone on this one right now so so we're going to Pivot and talk about where the plane is because really it's it's fascinating oh you might actually be interested in this article that uh the philanthropy News Digest just posted some philanthropy.com their Twitter feed link to a thing about how to hire technical people and it was a pretty good checklist for how to hire technical people as a non-technical person cool that's life but it was you know a fluffy listicle nice I will check it out thanks put that in the show notes also fluffy listicle I feel like that's got to be a mug as opposed to a substantive lisal or a musical lisal the musical well they susal the musical or just a buzzfeed listicle of like notes like favorite notes G sharp 12 notes you won't believe what they do what the notes do next next what well as we uh bring this one to a close I think we'd be remiss if we didn't congratulate our mathematician on the line uh on Pi Day um I think it's really building up to next year's Pi Day though where you get a couple more digits in the mix so Sydney congratulations on this mathematically um important day thank you uh and also with you good luck for holding back the forces of to day who are fighting the war on Pi Day in a way that will never get sufficient coverage from Bill O'Reilly that's just despicable um before we close Kevin I believe your lady friend is um in a competition for a thing involving New Jersey can you tell us about that uh yeah uh Victoria nce is my partner in crime frequent collaborator girlfriend we don't know we there are too many words we could use for we do many many things together uh and right now she's a finalist for a logo and tagline competition for the rebranding of Jersey City where we live and are sort of rapidly becoming pillars of the community in a way that's like what are we going to like what seriously uh but it's fun uh her design is the only of the only one of the finalists that does not use the Statue of Liberty which is kind of amazing uh because all of the Jersey City branding is like Statue of Liberty Statue of Liberty which to everyone outside the area says New York City right right um but you can find out more about her whole pitch which has a whole like branding plan to it and it's a really interesting modular system it's actually really good design I really love it uh and that's on her website Victorian n.com nece uh and that'll link you
