One in four adults in the state speaks a language other than English at home. As a result, thousands of events are interpreted in our courts every year. The New Jersey Judiciary needs professionals with excellent language skills to help ensure that all the people of New Jersey have access to our courts. To meet this need, the New Jersey Judiciary has developed one of the most professional court interpreting programs in the country. We consistently need more interpreters to ensure that everyone ’s needs are met. The New Jersey Judiciary uses two types of interpreters: 1. Full -time staff interpreters who are employees of the courts. 2. Contract freelance interpreters who are independent contractors. Why Become a Court Interpreter? • Highly competitive pay and excellent benefits for full -time staff interpreters. • Freelance interpreters have flexible schedules and earn between $237 and $412 per day, depending on skill level. • The opportunity to work in a courtroom or courthouse setting, assisting non -English speaking individuals in their dealings with the court system. Am I Qualified to Interpret? Being a professional court interpreter is not easy. Court interpreting is a sophisticated, highly technical profession that requires much more than being bilingual. To qualify as a court interpreter, you must possess a native -like ability to speak and understand both English and another language. You must have an extensive knowledge of both languages ’ slang, idiomatic expressions and dialects. As an interpreter, you must be able to • Interpret everything occurring in court - related events without adding, deleting or changing anything. • Perform three modes of interpretation: sight, consecutive, and simultaneous. • Understand and abide by the Code of Professional Conduct for Interpreters, Transliterators, and Translators adopted by the NJ Supreme Court. However, the need is acute for interpreters in: • Arabic • Bengali • Cantonese • Gujarati • Haitian Creole • Korean • Mandarin • Turkish • Vietnamese How Do I Become an Interpreter? There are formal requirements and testing that all prospective spoken language interpreters must pass in order to interpret in the New Jersey Judiciary. All American Sign Language interpreters must have legal training and be certified by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
